A focus on locally owned businesses east of downtown Rockford
While the Miracle Mile neighborhood's transition in Rockford may not qualify as a miracle, progress has been made in refurbishing business fronts over the past 20 years. “We focused on opening unique, local stores in this part of the city,” says Paula Olson, the executive director of Miracle Mile Rockford, an organization formed in 2005 as a grassroots effort to improve the business climate. “We don’t want to see a big box store in this area.” New stores have opened and established businesses have been renovated. On the west side of Keith Creek is the residential section of the neighborhood, with homes dating to the early 20th century.

Johnny Pamcakes is not a typo
One local business that is part of the revitalization is Johnny Pamcakes. While they have served pancakes since opening in 2008, the name is correct. John Lack and his wife Pam own the store and decided to incorporate both their names into the business. There are other eating hot spots in the neighborhood. “It may be surprising that one of the best restaurants is in a bowling alley, but Shooters Bar & Grill has great food, and they have a fish fry every Friday,” Olson says. The restaurant is inside Don Carter Lanes, which has recreational bowling and is the home for bowling leagues and occasional tournaments. Wolf Hollow is described as an eerie Gothic Victorian gift shop where it’s Halloween every day. The store is also rented out for photography sessions like family photos. Rivera’s Fresh Market is a Mexican-themed grocery store and restaurant, while Schnucks is a few blocks south.
Johnny Pamcakes is loved by all residents of Miracle Mile for offering breakfast all day.

Miracle Mile housing
Closer to downtown Rockford, the streets are narrow, and the sidewalks are under the canopy of mature trees. In some instances, the houses have been around for over 100 years. “The construction is solid. A lot of it is brick,” Olson says. Cape Cod, Tudor Revivals and Foursquares are priced between $100,000 and $250,000. The neighborhood also has a home from the 1840s that has been renovated and was once the home of a Union Civil War general. It has a wraparound porch and dormer windows. Multi-family units are $90,000 to $230,000.
