From downtown to the northern outskirts of Rockford
On the western side of the Rock River, Northwest United stretches from just a couple blocks north of downtown Rockford all the way up to the outskirts of the city. This strip of the northwestern side includes every aspect of Rockford, from parks and restaurants to the hospital at its heart. Still, it's not a catch-all neighborhood, with unique amenities like the BMX park just off Kilburn Avenue. While the community has plenty of action, it’s both close to downtown Rockford for more restaurant selections and events and offers residential streets that feel like other standard Rockford suburbs.

Older Cape Cods and ranches around Northwest United
While Northwest United covers a large expanse of Rockford, the houses tend to be Cape Cods and ranches built between the 30s and 50s. People might also find a National dating back to the turn of the century. “There are typically more older homes that have a lot of architectural character,” says lifelong Rockford resident and broker David Try with Century 21 Affiliated. “And that attracts homebuyers who aren’t looking for that newer cookie-cutter look.” Mature trees grow along the sidewalks here, creating a canopy of green that provides shade while residents are out taking a stroll or walking dogs. Homes on this side of town typically sell between $50,000 and $200,000.

A Norwegian restaurant with art studios above it
While Northwest United has multiple fast-food restaurants within its borders, Main Street is just to the east of the community, lined with locally-owned Rockford eateries. The Norwegian serves brunch and dinner dishes inspired by Norwegian and Scandinavian cuisine, made with ingredients sourced from local farmers and producers. Aebleskiver is one of their signature dishes—a Danish pancake topped with different jams. The Norwegian Lofts are above the restaurant, where the restaurant rents out the space to artists who can transform the space into galleries, studios or -- like one of the current tenants -- a hair salon. Near the center of the community on Fulton Avenue, Pinnon’s Meat Market originally opened in 1951 as a butcher, and while it still specializes in meat today, the deli also serves baked goods, seafood and prepared foods. For other grocery needs, Aldi and Walmart are located on the far northwestern side of the community.

Rockford's summer market and holiday parades
From May to September, the Friday Night Rockford City Market features over 70 food and artisan vendors under an outdoor pavilion. Every week features a different local band. For the 4th of July, Rockford hosts three separate parades and three different music venues throughout Davis Park. The festivities end in a 30-minute fireworks show synced to music. “All of the major holidays—Labor Day, Memorial Day—they all have a parade through downtown,” Try says.
