Rolling Green grows while Rockford slips
In the 2020 census, there were about 4,000 fewer people in Rockford compared to the 2010 count, but that is different in the Rolling Green neighborhood southeast of downtown Rockford. “The area that includes Rolling Green grew by about 400 people,” says Karen Hoffman, 8th Ward Alderman on the Rockford City Council and Rolling Green resident since 1983. “We’ve had an influx of young people who want smaller lot sizes and the opportunity to spruce up a house. They watch a lot of HGTV.” The neighborhood is about a 10-minute drive from downtown Rockford. In addition to Hoffman living in Rolling Green for over 40 years, she says she’s not the only one loyal to this neighborhood. “There are instances where kids will grow up in this neighborhood and buy a house here when they get older,” Hoffman says. “There are some instances where three generations are living here.”

Well-built homes in Rolling Green
Cape Cod, Minimal Traditional, raised ranch and ranch-style houses are priced between $100,000 and $200,000. “There are ones that are cheaper than that, but those need some work,” Hoffman says. “I’ve seen many instances where doors and walls were knocked down, and French doors and a deck were added. Another reason that young people like this neighborhood is that the construction of the houses is generally sturdier.” Most of the houses were built in the 1940s through the ‘60s. A home is usually scooped up quickly if it goes on the market. “If a house is not sold within a week, people automatically think it’s not priced right, or there’s something wrong with it,” Hoffman says.
According to the CAP crime index, Rolling Green's overall score is 4, the national average. All categories within the index, including violent crimes, are at the national level or slightly below.

Rockford’s 8th Ward has its own pub
What once was a car repair place is now a popular neighborhood hangout. 8th Ward Pub is on Broadway near the intersection of Alpine Road. “There are seats outside, and you see people sitting outside on nice days,” Hoffman says. “My husband is on the Winnebago County Board, and they’ve had meetings there. Everyone on the Rockford City Council is jealous because the 8th Ward has its own pub.” At Mexico Clasico, the staff prepare warm tortillas by hand and mash avocados with a mortar and pestle to make tableside guacamole. There’s a Family Dollar for quick home essentials, while a more extensive grocery selection at Schnucks and ALDI are about a mile and a half away in different directions.

Recent improvements to Harmon Park
At the center of the neighborhood, one of the winding streets wraps around Harmon Park, which has a playground, a half-basketball court and open green space for activities like soccer and throwing a frisbee. In October 2023, new features were added, like a pathway around the park’s perimeter lit up by close to 30 LED lights. The Rockford Park District received a grant to fund the project entirely. Lots of green space, a baseball diamond and a shaded playground are all part of the fun at 25th Street Park. Alpine Hills Adventure Park is open all year, with mountain biking, running and hiking trails. During the winter, the park is a haven for snow fun with snowboarding and tubing. If necessary, and it’s cold enough, the park also has a snow-making machine.
