Well-built homes in Rolling Green
Cape Cod, Minimal Traditional, raised ranch and ranch-style houses are priced between $100,000 and $200,000. “There are ones that are cheaper than that, but those need some work,” Hoffman says. “I’ve seen many instances where doors and walls were knocked down, and French doors and a deck were added. Another reason that young people like this neighborhood is that the construction of the houses is generally sturdier.” Most of the houses were built in the 1940s through the ‘60s. A home is usually scooped up quickly if it goes on the market. “If a house is not sold within a week, people automatically think it’s not priced right, or there’s something wrong with it,” Hoffman says.According to the CAP crime index, Rolling Green's overall score is 4, the national average. All categories within the index, including violent crimes, are at the national level or slightly below.
Recent improvements to Harmon Park
At the center of the neighborhood, one of the winding streets wraps around Harmon Park, which has a playground, a half-basketball court and open green space for activities like soccer and throwing a frisbee. In October 2023, new features were added, like a pathway around the park’s perimeter lit up by close to 30 LED lights. The Rockford Park District received a grant to fund the project entirely. Lots of green space, a baseball diamond and a shaded playground are all part of the fun at 25th Street Park. Alpine Hills Adventure Park is open all year, with mountain biking, running and hiking trails. During the winter, the park is a haven for snow fun with snowboarding and tubing. If necessary, and it’s cold enough, the park also has a snow-making machine.Rockford’s 8th Ward has its own pub
What once was a car repair place is now a popular neighborhood hangout. 8th Ward Pub is on Broadway near the intersection of Alpine Road. “There are seats outside, and you see people sitting outside on nice days,” Hoffman says. “My husband is on the Winnebago County Board, and they’ve had meetings there. Everyone on the Rockford City Council is jealous because the 8th Ward has its own pub.” At Mexico Clasico, the staff prepare warm tortillas by hand and mash avocados with a mortar and pestle to make tableside guacamole. There’s a Family Dollar for quick home essentials, while a more extensive grocery selection at Schnucks and ALDI are about a mile and a half away in different directions.Getting around Rockford with public transportation
Rolling Green is a car-dependent neighborhood, despite the abundance of sidewalks in the area. To get to destinations outside Rolling Green, the Rockford Mass Transit District has buses that travel on Broadway, Harrison Avenue and Alpine Road. The Chicago/Rockford International Airport is less than 20 minutes away for trips out of town, and Chicago O’Hare International Airport is nearly 70 miles away.Rockford East students get a sneak peek into the working world
Rolling Green Elementary School may be within walking distance for some in the neighborhood. It gets a C on Niche and has a 13-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Students then move on to Bernard W. Flinn Middle School with a C-minus grade. Rockford East High School is rated a C-plus on Niche. The school gets a B-minus for college preparation, partially due to the College & Career Academies of Rockford, allowing students to shadow professionals in the business, health, production and hospitality industries. The experience leads to dual credit or even industry certifications.
