Community-focused area southwest of downtown Rockford

Southwest of downtown Rockford is a neighborhood that’s an acronym for one of the efforts to revitalize this part of the city. Swiftt stands for South West Ideas for Today and Tomorrow. That organization focuses on attracting and maintaining business in the area. It’s a neighborhood where the community works to make lives better. One of those places is the St. Elizabeth Catholic Community Center, which runs a food and clothing pantry. “We serve about 400-500 households weekly and provide people with a 2 to 3-day supply of emergency meals to those who qualify,” says Daniel Castree, the food pantry coordinator. “There’s also a clothing pantry that’s open twice a week. Everything from infant to adult clothes has been donated.”

New music stage in Levings Park

The community also gathers for recreation. A new music stage is part of Levings Park's summer 2024 music season. It's the new site for summer concerts like Live at Levings and Domingos en el Parque, which caters to the Hispanic community. They run from June through August and feature local talent performing on Sundays, with each series happening on alternating weeks. West Rock Wake Park is on Levings Lake and provides water skiing and wakeboarding lessons. Instead of a boat, a cable system is used in the instruction. Liberty Park has a spray pad, baseball diamond and playground. Over 150 acres of trees, plants and flowers can be explored at the Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden. It’s also the site of a concert series in the Fountain Garden on Sundays from mid-July through early September. Access to the Rock River via boat can be done with a designated launch site at the end of Lane Street.

City of Rockford home improvement grants

The houses closer to downtown are mostly older, priced between $50,000 and $100,000. Some homes need work, and the City of Rockford has what is called the Home Repair and Accessibility Program for people who need help financing improvements who are at or below 80% of the area median income level. Some of the older houses are Cape Cod and minimal traditional. Older homes have been renovated, and some have been torn down and replaced with new construction. Renovations and newer homes are in the $200,000 to $250,000 range. “Further away from downtown, the houses are on larger lots, usually a quarter to a half an acre,” says Fidel Batres, a broker with Keller Williams Realty Signature with 12 years of real estate experience. “Further to the west, there are larger lots, up to five acres.” These are priced from $200,000 to $300,000—townhouses built in the early 2000s range from $150,000 to $200,000.
