Westlake Village
Boating on Westlake and hitting The Lynx
The Westlake Village Community Center greets those arriving from the entrance on Smith Road and anchors the community with a range of amenities, all kept in shape by the Westlake Village Homeowners Association. These include a heated in-ground community pool, playground, and courts for pickleball, basketball and tennis. It’s a few steps from the community center to the beach on the south end of Westlake, the 82-acre centrepiece of the community. Residents can fish with boats under 10 horsepower and moor at private docks. The local newsletter shares impressive catches and keeps everyone informed about fishing limits and which species are catch-and-release. When residents aren’t biking or walking the lake's paved perimeter trail, they may be in their golf cart headed to Lynx Golf Course at Westlake Village—a daily-fee, privately-owned course with 18 holes built into the hilly, partially wooded terrain. Patrons enjoy drinks, snacks and the occasional food truck on the grounds.Turnkey properties and empty lots in Westlake Village
Residents on the village’s west end look out their back windows at golf course greens, while those to the east see their personal dock on the water. The strategic shape of the reservoir ensures each waterfront home has a lake view, with sections bumping out to surround each cul-de-sac. Many residents built their properties from scratch and there are still opportunities to do so, with dozens of single-family lots along the golf course starting at $15,000 and a handful on the lake reaching up to $45,000. Turnkey single-family options sell quickly once they hit the market, says Cojkic. These include ranch-styles with 3-car garages, along with custom colonial- and modern traditional-style estates with large bay or paladin windows. Prices range from about $230,000 to $300,000 for those on the golf course, and from about 325,000 to $430,000 for waterfront options with room for the motorboat.Heading into Pecatonica for school
Most kids in the neighborhood attend classes 5 miles away in Pecatonica, which is home to three namesake institutions. Pecatonica Elementary School scores an A-minus from Niche and teaches prekindergarten through fourth grade. Pecatonica Community Middle School also receives an A-minus. Kids graduate from here to Pecatonica High School—or “Pec,” as locals call it—which scores a B. Pec students also enjoy additional hands-on course options like life science at the Pecatonica River through a partnership with Illinois Department of Natural Resources, as well as blacksmithing.Grabbing a bite and shopping in Winnebago or Pecatonica
While groceries and restaurant fare require a drive past cornfields and wetlands, Westlake Village residents have a few options within a 5-mile radius. “The essentials are at the Sullivans in the town of Winnebago, and there are also a couple of dollar stores as well so it’s a good start for the smaller stuff,” Cojkic says. While out grabbing their food for the week, locals may stop in this community’s 2 square mile downtown stretch for a scenic walk and a cup or cone at The Scoop, a staple ice cream parlor. In the opposite direction is Pecatonica’s equally small-scale pickings with restaurant standouts like Cimino’s Pizza. Big-box convenience is in Rockford proper at the CherryVale Mall.Getting around from Westlake Village
Like many isolated subdivisions on the outskirts of Rockford, car travel is the name of the game for Westlake Village residents. They drive past acres and cornfields into Winnebago, Pecatonica or Rockford for most essentials or for their daily commute. The smaller cities are each about 5 miles away from the neighborhood, while Rockford is about 12 on U.S. 20. “I head into Rockford often and my husband works in Rockford as well,” Cojkic affirms. “Anytime you need to commute is like a 25-minute drive, there’s usually not too much traffic.” As for longer journeys, Chicago Rockford International Airport is about 12 miles away, giving residents a more convenient option than O’Hare or Midway in Chicagoland.Events for the Westlake Village community
Westlake’s homeowners association works to establish a sense of unity through monthly and annual events, from book club to breakfast with the Easter bunny. "Over the summer they do bounce houses and different fun stuff for our community and the kids,” Cojkic says. “And we have food trucks here all the time.” Most activities on the schedule take place at the Community Center’s indoor event space or on the back patio. The facilities hold about 100 people and are available to rent for baby showers, birthday parties and other private affairs. Finally, the Westlake Village Lake Committee meets every so often to discuss environmental issues regarding their beloved water body and create ongoing solutions for natural and man-made concerns.
