Rockville Center, a place for commuters and shoppers

Known for its thriving downtown, Rockville Centre, 30 miles from New York City, is a village in the town of Hempstead named after local preacher and community leader Mordecai “Rock” Smith. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the mixed suburban and commercial village has a population of about 25,500. Many of its residents work from home or commute to Manhattan. Commuting is convenient in Rockville, as the area is bisected by the Sunrise Highway and bordered by the Southern State Parkway. Rockville Centre is also a stop along the Long Island Rail Road, leading directly to Penn Station. As a primarily residential area, homeowners appreciate the location’s peace and quiet while still having access to a lively downtown district.

Shopping, dining and nightlife in downtown

"Our Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce maintains and supports the vibrant downtown," says Christine Ferramosca, a local real estate agent with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “There are restaurants to satisfy every taste, and you will be hard-pressed to get bored of dining in Rockville Centre.” Rockville is known for its shopping, dining and nightlife, all in its bustling downtown, which borders the Sunrise Highway and the Long Island Rail Road. The commercial area has locally owned and chain establishments, serving everything from high-end Italian and seafood to classic pub fare. South Long Beach Road also has plenty of retail shops and restaurants. “There are several grocers in town,” says Ferramosca. “Including King Kullen, Key Food and Associated Supermarkets of Rockville Centre who is nominated for a Herald Long Island Choice Award. There are several in neighboring towns that are great choices as well, I particularly like GalaFresh in Baldwin - they have a great fish department.”

Unique homes with front and backyards

Homes radiate from the central downtown area, bordered by wide streets and narrow sidewalks. Most have manicured front and back yards with space for an in-ground pool. While the area is primarily single-family homes, condos, townhouses, co-ops, and multifamily buildings are also available. “Rockville Centre was incorporated as a village in 1893. As a result, there are many beautiful homes from the time period, especially Victorians,” says Ferramosca. “As the village emerged as a commuting town into the early 20th century, many colonial and Tudor-style homes were also built. There are pockets of ranches, split-level homes, and even Spanish-style homes that all serve to create a varied yet cohesive neighborhood feel.” The median price for homes is $802,500, above the national median of $406,100. According to FBI data, violent and property crime is well below the state and national averages.

Commuters take the Southern State Parkway and then travel west on Interstate 495 to reach New York City in 45 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic. Those commuting using the Rockville Centre train station arrive at Penn Station in 30 minutes. Residents may park at the station, but they can also use the Nassau Inter-County Express, which stops along South Station Plaza beside the train station. Rockville Centre Recreation Center

Rockville Centre experiences all four seasons, though the weather changes dramatically between summer and winter. During the hot and humid summer months, residents explore riverside parks and take a dip in the swimming areas along Hempstead Lake. Just a 15-minute drive south is Long Beach. Mill River Complex Park is on the western border of Rockville Centre, an outdoor space where residents come to exercise, play sports or stroll along the well-paved footpaths. “We have a very robust rec center,” says Carol O’Leary, the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce secretary and a branch manager at Howard Hannah Coach Realtors. “It has programs for all age groups and recently installed an all-inclusive playground.” The recreation center is open year round so residents can participate in weekly programs during the cold, sometimes snowy, winter months.

Events hosted by the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce

Most events are centered in Rockville’s downtown and hosted by the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce. “We have multiple events throughout the year to drive business to our local businesses,” says O’Leary. “We used to have a street fair. We skipped it last year, but we’re bringing it back this year.” The Chamber of Commerce’s largest event is Playing on the Porch. “It involves the whole community,” says O’Leary. “At people’s houses. Throughout the community, people have bands and singing and people walk around and listen to music.” Other notable events include the June Fest, lasting from May 31 to June 9. The week is filled with events like a Village Vintage Car and Firetruck Show, Restaurant Week and an art walk.
Religious holidays and services are held at houses of worship in the area, such as St. Mark’s Methodist Church, Central Synagogue Beth Emeth, St. Agnes Cathedral and others.
