A town that just won’t go the way of the dinosaurs

Although Rocky Hill might be most famous for the fossilized dinosaur tracks at Dinosaur State Park, this Hartford suburb is alive and kicking, offering a smorgasbord of restaurants, acclaimed schools and plenty of housing options. “Everybody loves Rocky Hill,” says Dawn Satagaj, a Realtor from William Raveis Real Estate who has lived in the area since 2002 and has sold real estate there for 31 years. “It’s got great parks, an active parks and rec department, a terrific community center and easy access to all the major highways, hospitals and universities.” And thanks to Interstate 91, Hartford is just 15 minutes' drive away, but given the amenities nearby, residents often find they have good reasons to stick close to home.

Detached homes and connected townhouses

Raised ranch-style and Colonial Revival homes with two to three bedrooms sell for around $400,000, while Cape Cod homes and single-story ranch-style houses start at under $300,000. Many houses were built between the 1930s and ‘70s, but west of Interstate 91, prospective buyers can find 21st Century homes that span over 2,500 square feet and include four or more bedrooms. These homes usually start at $600,000. Rocky Hill also has a fair share of townhouses. There’s a selection of Tudor-style townhouses near downtown that go for around $200,000. Townhouses overlooking more spacious lots can be found all over and usually start at around $300,000. But whatever option a homebuyer chooses, the future looks bright for that asset. “Property values have remained strong, so homes here are a good financial investment,” Satagaj says.

Acclaimed schools with an emphasis on service

K-3 students can attend West Hill or Myrtle H. Stevens schools before moving on to Moser School to finish up their elementary education. They might then go to Albert D. Griswold Middle before attending Rocky Hill High School. Myrtle H. Stevens, Moser and Albert D. Griswold schools have been awarded A-minus ratings by Niche while West Hill and Rocky Hill High hold enviable A’s. Rocky Hill High School students volunteer across the Rocky Hill community and donate food and clothes as part of the school’s annual Lend a Paw Day of Service.

Trekking through the Triassic

A giant geodesic dome encloses 500 dinosaur tracks at Dinosaur State Park. Visitors can also stop by the park’s museum or explore the trails of the arboretum. At Dividend Pond Park and Archaeological District, hikers can enjoy 3 miles of trails, the ruins of a historic mill and a waterfall with a 28-foot drop. Locals can snow-shoe and cross-country ski at Quarry Park during the winter months, but stunning views of the Connecticut River are there year-round.

Rocky Hill is a foodie’s paradise

“Rocky Hill has really good restaurants, and they’re getting more all the time,” Satagaj says. Carbone’s Prime serves steak, cocktails and Italian fare while Saybrook Fish House offers upscale seafood such as calamari and whole belly clams. Residents can watch the sun set over the Connecticut River at the Ferry Grill & Chill or watch the game and play a round of pool at Arch II Sports Bar & Grill. On top of this, Rocky Hill boasts Thai, Indian, Japanese and Mexican restaurants too. For groceries and home goods, big-box stores like Walmart and Stop & Shop can be found conveniently off Interstate 91 and Silas Deane Highway.

Old (and modern) ways of traveling

The Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry is the country’s oldest continually operating ferry service, carrying travelers across the Connecticut River since 1655. Only in operation during the warmer months, the ferry transports cars, cyclists and pedestrians. Residents can travel by bus too, as CTtransit line 55 passes right through downtown Rocky Hill, taking Connecticut Route 99 up to Hartford and down to Middletown. Other residents might prefer sticking to the car and taking advantage of Interstate 91, which bisects the neighborhood. Hartford, 10 miles to the north, is only a 15-minute drive away. New Haven is 30 miles south and can be reached in 35 minutes.

Fun for kids and seniors

Rocky Hill is home to a recently renovated senior/community center. “The senior center is extremely active to the point where seniors in surrounding areas will join in on events,” Satagaj says. The community center hosts events such as the annual Winter Wonderland, a family-friendly celebration of Christmas featuring food trucks, horse-drawn carriage rides, ice sculptures and more.
