Rocky Ripple Festival brings the community together through music
One of the most anticipated events is the Rocky Ripple Festival, held annually at Hohlt Park. This festival features musicians, artists, and creators from across the Midwest. Local resident and Butler-Tarkington Neighborhood Association President Ed Fujawa says it’s a local tradition for the governor to welcome trick-or-treaters to his home. In addition, Butler University’s influence on the area means that residents have access to a range of events, from performances at Clowes Memorial Hall to sporting events at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Melody Inn on Illinois Street, which opened in 1935, is a popular venue for punk rock shows. Butler-Tarkington is home to houses of worship, such as St. Thomas Aquinas Church, known for its Sausage Fest, which brings the community together with food, drinks, and live music every August.

James Whitcomb Riley 43 students are introduced to visual and performing arts
Students can attend James Whitcomb Riley School 43, part of Indianapolis Public Schools, for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The school, which opened in 1909, earns a C-minus grade from Niche. It offers a Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) program that integrates courses in music, art, dance, theater and digital media into the curriculum. Older students may attend Arsenal Technical High School, which also has a C-minus rating. Additionally, the neighborhood is home to the International School of Indiana, a private school for pre-K through 12th grade. Students at the International School of Indiana are taught language immersion from pre-k through grade 3. In language immersion schools, children are taught in two languages. Butler University is a private four-year college in Butler-Tarkington/Broad Ripple.

Tarkington Park is a major recreational hub in the neighborhood that was renovated in 2017. The park has playgrounds, splash pads, basketball and tennis courts. There is an annual Juneteenth celebration in the park. Black Park, Ramsey Park, and Alice Carter Park also have playgrounds. Nearby, Crown Hill Cemetery, with views of downtown Indianapolis, is a popular place for walks, jogs and bike rides. Locals also go to Butler University’s Holcomb Gardens for walks or biking.

Ride the IndyGo bus into downtown
Butler-Tarkington/Rocky Ripple provides residents with easy access to downtown Indianapolis just 5 miles away on Boulevard Place road. The neighborhood is close to I-65, which runs north-south and connects Indianapolis to cities like Chicago to the north and Louisville to the south. Additionally, I-70 is accessible from Butler-Tarkington, running east-west and connecting Indianapolis to cities such as Columbus, Ohio to the east and St. Louis to the west. I-465, the loop around Indianapolis, is also nearby There is also access to two IndyGo bus lines and the Rapid Transit Red Line, for public transportation. There are efforts to improve travel in the area. Fox59 Indianapolis reported in March 2024 that the Indianapolis Department of Public Works will begin renovating the 16th St. bridge over the White River during the summer. The bridge, built in 1946, has significant wear and tear. The project will start with the substructure and riverbanks, with full lane closures expected in June 2025. To avoid disruption, the nearby 30th St. bridge, under construction since 2022, is expected to reopen by May 2025. “Work on the 30th Street bridge might have stalled,” Fujawa says. “There are a lot of weeds growing up on site suggesting a lack of activity.”
