About Rose Valley, PA

Historic town filled with stunning homes

A town built with a vision of creativity, Rose Valley embraces its beginnings as a community designed on the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement by architect William Price in the early 1900s. “It’s like living in a magical paradise,” says former resident Saundra Shepard, a real estate agent with Berkshire Hathaway. “You just get this magical feeling when you’re there. The atmosphere, the surroundings and the homes are all just lovely. It’s like a shire and the residents of Rose Valley are the hobbits.”

Beautiful homes and lush greenery

Price’s standard for craftsmanship was high as he set forth to create beautiful homes that go far beyond the imagination of mass-produced properties. Much of his work features unique, eye-catching qualities that take residents back to an old world, including stone and stucco siding, decorative tiles that add a pop of color to the home’s exterior and red-tiled roofs incorporated into charming English cottage-style homes and other various architectures. These homes are hidden behind lush greenery on narrow streets, all part of Price’s vision for ornate homes adorned by nature. Most of Price’s homes are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, including some from the 1600s that he redesigned. The cultivation of this Arts and Crafts community has carried on through generations. There are many newer single-family homes from the mid-1900s to early 2000s with modern touches like attached garages, while still featuring creative elements that make each house different from the next. From the old-world feel of Rose Valley’s historic homes to a more stylish modern house, prices can be anywhere from $700,000 to more than $1 million, typically based on the property’s size.

Historic buildings

The Hedgerow Theatre Company was also born from the town’s Arts and Crafts movement. The former mill was reconstructed into a theater by Price and has attracted famous artists from Richard Basehart and Ann Harding to more recent actors like Keanu Reeves. Today, the theater company continues to put on incredible shows for the public and also serves as a theater school. Many celebrations are held at The Old Mill, another historic building featuring stunning Arts and Crafts details. The venue is used for weddings and other special events throughout the year. It lies along Ridley Creek and one of Rose Valley’s many hidden nature trails. “The trails are well-kept secrets,” says Shepard, “You won’t see anything about them on paper, but they meander all through Rose Valley.”

Art galleries and garden parties

Residents can learn more about the town’s history at the Rose Valley Museum at Thunderbird Lodge, which features art and other collections from Rose Valley during the early 1900s. The building itself is also historically significant. Formerly a barn built in 1790, Price converted it into studios for artists Charles and Alice Barber Stephens. Visitors can stop by for monthly events, whether it’s viewing an art gallery or donning a 1920s outfit for a garden party and picnic.
