Previously a French colony in the early 1800s, Melrose Orchards is now a quiet, countryside neighborhood 10 miles from downtown Roseburg. Originally called French Settlement, the neighborhood is full of vast open acres and farmland. “There’s more farm life here than anything,” says Chris Woodruff, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Southern Oregon who’s been selling homes for nearly a decade. “People move here for privacy.” In Melrose Orchards, people stay out of each other’s business, but it’s purely because of space. “Homes have at least 2 to 5 acres of land,” says David Jaques, Broker/Owner of Al Pine Real Estate 1, who has lived in the area for nearly four decades. Melrose Elementary School, one of the most sought-after schools in the area, is in the neighborhood. “A lot of people looking for a home are really looking for their kids,” he says.

Oregon wildfire season
One downside to the nature in Melrose Orchards is wildfire season, a period from July to October when the area is highly prone to forest fires. Luckily, there are federal forest policies to reduce the risk. Oregon insurance code requires every homeowner's insurance policy to include wildfire coverage. FEMA, or the Federal Emergency Management Agency, offers tips and resources. The Douglas Forest Protective Association and Coos Forest Protective Association work with the Oregon Department of Forestry to prevent wildfires.
