Early 20th century homes in DeMotte and rambling farmhouses throughout the township
From the 1950s to the early 2000s, Keener’s buildable land attracted developers, so today’s market covers a range of options that complement downtown DeMotte’s selection of folk-style homes from the early 1900s. Buildable lots still go on sale, ranging from about $20,000 to $120,000—though options reaching past $500,000 hit the market less frequently. Ranch-style homes, split-levels and New Traditional homes sit on lots measuring from one-third to a full acre with sidewalks out front and mature tree shade in the backyard. Most sell from $115,000 to $500,000, depending on the age and condition, as some homes need repairs to become move-in ready. Custom homes on country roads or in the Preserve at Sandy Pines golf course community range from $530,000 to $850,000.From Field of Dreams to Sandy Pines Golf Club
Community parks are interspersed amongst DeMotte’s residential and commercial areas. The largest park, Field of Dreams, has a collection of baseball/softball and soccer fields on the west side. Spencer Park is an active community hub with summertime festivals and concerts that also includes a playground, tennis courts and a pool. “We also have one of the nicest golf courses in Indiana,” says Linda White, secretary with the DeMotte Chamber of Commerce and local Realtor with McColly Real Estate. “People travel from all over the country to go play.” Located on the east side of Keener, Sandy Pines Golf Club is an 18-hole public course that NBC’s GolfPass ranked the second best in Indiana in 2024.Zoned for Kankakee Valley School Corporation
DeMotte Elementary School teaches prekindergarten through third grade and receives an A-minus rating on Niche. Students continue to Kankakee Valley Intermediate School for fourth and fifth grade then Kankakee Valley Middle School. Both schools are graded B-plus. Kankakee Valley High School scores a B. The school's career and technical education program allows students to receive training to become welders, emergency medical technicians and educators. DeMotte Christian Schools are a private, tuition-based option for prekindergarten through 12th grade.Festivities in DeMotte parks
Many Keener Township resources are anchored in DeMotte. “The library is a pillar in the community,” says Shannon Heldak, manager of the DeMotte Public Library. “We provide free programs for all ages, from birth to seniors.” These range from monthly story times for little ones to book discussions and bingo for the adults. “Our Chamber of Commerce has a big presence,” White says. “The Movie in the Park is a fun event, the businesses will supply snacks. And then we have farmer markets in the summer.” The second Saturday of August draws up to 6,000 visitors to DeMotte for the community's Touch of Dutch Festival. “It’s the largest festival in Jasper County,” White says. “We have food, crafts, and a parade. We give different prizes for the best use of the Dutch theme, and we have the Citizen of the Year and Grand Marshall. This year, we outgrew Spencer Park.”Getting to northwest Indiana cities or downtown Chicago

Along with major chains, the neighborhood Strack and Van Til and Dollar General are located here. Also along the thoroughfare, Cup of Joy Café serves fresh ground brews and pastries along with lighter lunch options like soups and wrap, and Boundary Waters Restaurant stays open late on Fridays and Saturdays with a full bar and pool tables.
