Tucked within the scenic Hudson Valley, Rosendale’s quiet streets, rustic storefronts and small-town lifestyle are hallmarks of a community that’s been around for decades. Surrounded by the Catskills Mountains, this quaint community offers a blend of natural beauty, rich history and a vibrant arts scene. Small hamlets like Cottekill and Lawrenceville encapsulate the artistic charm and tranquility that the town is known for. However, the hamlet of Rosendale stands out with its eccentric Main Street that transports residents and visitors back to the past. "It's the epitome of small-town America with an artsy touch," says Greg Berardi, principal broker at Berardi Realty, who has decades of experience in the industry. "In the last 30 years, not much has changed. It's still a close-knit community with affordable prices, children ride their bikes around the street, and the supermarket looks the same as when I was a kid."
Live performances in former mines
Rosendale's rise to fame stems from its cement and limestone production between the mid-19th and early 20th century. The town played a significant role in creating important national landmarks, such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty's pedestal, and the U.S. Capitol's wings. Berardi notes that even today, New York City architects often come up to see if the cement is still adequate for restoration projects around the city. Although some mines are still in use, others lie abandoned, serve as storage spaces, or are frequented for live performances. Iron Mountain, a records storage facility utilized by Fortune 500 companies, stores everything from paper records to celebrity memorabilia. "There could be something as crazy as Michael Jackson's jacket down there," Berardi says. The Snyder Estate Natural Cement Historic District is home to many former mines, but the Widow Jane Mine is a local namesake. "It's now a performance venue," says Machree Quaker, principal broker at The Machree Group LLC, who has over 20 years of experience in the industry. "A lot of people go to concerts there," along with arts performances that include poetry readings and plays.

Rosendale's vibrant arts scene
Rosendale is a lesser-known haven for artists and musicians across the region. A small gallery showcases local artists on Main Street, and across the road, the Redwing Blackbird Theater is a performance venue and workshop space for puppeteers. Traveling theater groups like Theatre on the Road call Rosendale home, while trapeze flyers and dance groups are based out of the nearby Stone Mountain Farm. At Stone Mountain, residents can enjoy everything from circus arts shows to homegrown festivals like "Barning Man," a take on the iconic Burning Man festival where community and art sit at the forefront.
Art seeps into the streets every July during the Rosendale Street Festival, with portions of the proceeds helping fund scholarships for music students around the valley. "It's the biggest event in town," Quaker says. Dozens of bands showcasing different genres take over Main Street for two full days while vendors from across the region sell fresh food, tasty drinks and handcrafted goods.

Hiking and rock-climbing in the Catskills
Located in the heart of the Catskills, Rosendale residents are surrounded by winding creeks, clear blue lakes, rugged hiking trails and world-class rock climbing. The nearby Mohonk Preserve spans 8,000 acres and offers landscapes that range from mountain ridges and dense forests to waterways and open fields with blooming wildflowers. Seventy miles of paved carriage roads and rocky trails attract hiking enthusiasts, while the famous Shawangunk Ridge's cliffs, also known as "the Gunks," cater to experienced climbers.
Closer to home, Willow Kiln Park hides behind Main Street. Picnic tables shaded by weeping willows make for leisurely afternoons, while trailheads lead explorers up the 500-foot-tall Joppenbergh Mountain. Tumbled trails wind through forests and past caverns and offer breathtaking vistas of Rondout Creek. The creek is another popular waterway for kayakers and anglers. Meandering paths lead to Rosendale Trestle, a 940-foot pedestrian bridge that spans Rondout Creek along the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. The trail is just one small section of the 750-mile Empire State Trail that weaves throughout Upstate New York.
The Rosendale Community Center is another popular green space along New York State Route 32. Amenities include the town's only outdoor pool, open throughout the summer, and sports facilities like pickleball courts and baseball fields. A colorful playground caters to little ones, while an event building is open for weekly rotating activities like yoga classes and slow jam music groups.

"Many buyers choose Rosendale for its affordability," Berardi says, as home prices continue to rise in surrounding areas like Kingston and New Paltz. Farther out, winding roads give way to secluded properties hidden behind the tree line. Modest cottages and the occasional 18th-century stone house can sell for as low as $200,000. Ranch-style houses can range from $200,000 to $600,000, depending on upgrades and lot size. Spacious contemporary designs on multiple acres can sell for over $1 million, but these properties are not as common as in surrounding towns like Esopus and Woodstock.

Small class sizes at Rondout Valley High
Three school districts serve Rosendale, including Rondout Valley Central School District, Kingston City School District and New Paltz Central School District. In Rosendale Hamlet, kindergarteners through third graders may attend Marbletown Elementary School, which scores a B rating on Niche. The C-rated Rondout Valley Intermediate School serves fourth through sixth graders. Both Rondout Valley Junior High School and Rondout Valley High School earn a C-plus. With a student-to-teacher ratio of 11-to-1, high schoolers benefit from small class sizes and individualized attention.

Shopping and dining along Main Street
Rosendale's Main Street has an array of locally owned eateries like Garden House, known for its quirky atmosphere and fresh Mediterranean fare. Mismatched chairs and umbrellas are scattered along its small garden, where patrons can enjoy live music and an outdoor bar. "It's nothing glorious, but the owner turned it into a really fun spot," Berardi says. Along Route 32, Truss and Trestle is hard to miss, as a retro bar sign points directly to this small diner. Deli classics like Reubens and cheesesteaks make for hearty lunches, while slow-smoked brisket and hanger steak over cheese fries and gravy keep patrons coming back.
Main Street is dotted with vintage shops, antique stores and the occasional art gallery. At Soiled Doves, shoppers can peruse eclectic finds like jewelry, nicknacks and vintage clothing. Down the street, The Big Cheese is an all-day deli and coffee shop, but it also sells imported gourmet cheeses and fresh produce for a last-minute charcuterie board. Less than 1 mile away, MyTown Marketplace is located along New York State Route 32 for everyday groceries, while the Rosendale Farmers Market runs every Sunday morning from June to October.

Commutes on Route 32
Rosendale is a car-dependent community, as only one Ulster County Area Transit bus stop lines New York State Route 32. Public transportation may be limited, but Trailways offers connections to nearby towns and New York City, making Rosendale accessible for both residents and visitors. While Rosendale is mainly rural, Interstate 87, also known as the New York State Thruway, leads about 71 miles north to Albany International Airport and 91 miles south to New York City. Residents are about 8 miles from Kingston's HealthAlliance Hospital and New Paltz's charming boutiques and cafes.
