Roseville is a Twin Cities suburb with a family-friendly vibe

Roseville is one of two Twin Cities suburbs that border Saint Paul and Minneapolis and is less than 10 miles from either downtown. The city really blossomed in the mid-20th century, which is reflected in its housing market. Highly rated schools and a sprawling Central Park help create a family-friendly atmosphere. People travel from across the Twin Cities to shop at the bustling Rosedale Center, but there are plenty of smaller shopping centers and local businesses as well.

The Roseville Civic Campus includes Roseville City Hall, the Oval Skate Park, the fire station and the maintenance facility.

Mid-20th-century homes are on par with Twin Cities prices

Realtor Shawn Hartmann, leader of the Hartmann Team at Re/Max Results, says that Roseville is “a really pretty neighborhood to live in, with established trees and green space.” There is a mix of homes, from early 1900s properties to new construction, but the leading trend is mid-20th-century houses. “It’s a real classic, midcentury, first-tier suburb,” says Hartmann, who has lived in the city for over 20 years. “You have a lot of rambler-style or ranch-style properties. They used a lot of plaster at that time on the interior... with brick and stucco exteriors and nice-sized lots.” There are also townhouses, like those in Westwood Village in South Owasso, and condos, such as Hamline House Condominiums in Lake Owasso.

“In Roseville, the median and the average prices tend to fall exactly in line with the Twin Cities,” Hartmann says. “It’s a really nice middle market.” He adds that Roseville is less expensive than Saint Paul by itself, especially in neighborhoods like Union Park. Single-family homes typically range from the low $200,000s to the high $800,000s, while townhouses and condos generally cost from under $100,000 to the mid-$600,000s.

Students attend highly rated Roseville private and public schools

The highly rated Roseville Area School District receives better marks than both the Minneapolis and Saint Paul public school districts. You can apply for a transfer to any school within the district, but some schools, like the highly rated Harambee Elementary School, use a lottery system due to limited availability in magnet programs. Private options include the highly rated Concordia Academy. Despite its name, the University of Northwestern – Saint Paul is actually located in Roseville. This private, Christian university has over 60 degree options.

Downtown Saint Paul and downtown Minneapolis are 15 minutes away

Roseville’s location between the Twin Cities means many residents commute to Saint Paul or Minneapolis for work, especially because of major employers like Ecolab and Target. “The convenience of being able to get everywhere is why I won’t move, because it’s just too easy,” Hartmann says. Part of this convenience comes from Highway 36, which intersects with Interstate 35 West. “That gets me all over the Twin Cities, between Saint Paul and Minneapolis,” Hartmann says. It’s about a 15-minute drive to either downtown. The Metro Transit bus also stops throughout the city.

Rosedale Center attracts shoppers from across the Twin Cities

The city is known for its retail scene, especially Rosedale Center, a shopping mall with over 150 shops, restaurants and experiences. “It’s a beautiful mall,” Hartmann says. “I think it’s the nicest mall in the state.” While there, you can:

  • Do some shopping at apparel stores like Anthropologie
  • Find clothes, kitchen supplies and more at department stores like JCPenney
  • Sit down and enjoy a meal at restaurants like Burger Dive
  • Grab a latte before you keep exploring at Caribou Coffee
  • Hang out with friends and play games at Playland Arcade
Between the mall, big-box stores, like the first-ever Target, and local businesses, Hartmann says there’s “every type of shopping you would need.” Residents will also head into the Twin Cities for a bite to eat.

Central Park and nearby lakes offer plenty of outdoor fun

The heart of the city’s recreation is Central Park, a 225-acre green space with multiuse trails that connect the park’s many amenities. While there, you can:

  • Catch some live music at the Frank Rog Amphitheatre
  • Bring your kids to the playground
  • Play sports at the Dale Street Athletic Fields
  • Walk through the gardens at the Muriel Sahlin Arboretum
  • Canoe and fish on Lake Bennett
Lake Bennett is just one of the many lakes in Roseville, along with Lake Owasso and Langston Lake. “The lakes are beautiful,” Hartmann says. “They have beaches, and there are opportunities for fishing and ice fishing.” The Roseville Ice Arena regularly opens its rink to the public for open hockey and skate times. You are also near Saint Paul’s Como Park, which is home to the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
