Lake Toxaway is a long-established resort area in the mountains of Western North Carolina
Lake Toxaway has been a sought-after destination for over a century. In the late 1800s, as the mountains of western North Carolina were becoming a popular tourist destination, several businessmen from Pittsburgh developed the area into a summer resort. After damming the Toxaway River, the lake became the largest privately owned lake in the state, which remains true to this day. Once the lake was complete, the area filled with inns and hotels, welcoming visitors that included Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and members of the Vanderbilt Family. Even though the lake is still privately owned, property owners within Lake Toxaway Estates or guests of The Greystone Inn are allowed access. Large lake homes with sizable plots of land and private docks are a common sight; homes off the water also have plenty of space among the pines and oaks.
“The area is beautiful with easy access to gorgeous state parks,” says Amanda Jennings Gravley, a broker with Fisher Realty. “It offers easy access to all the beauty of the outdoors that brings people to Western North Carolina.”
Comparatively higher-priced lake homes

Homes in the surrounding area can range from $400,000 to $650,000, and architectural styles include cabins, ranch styles and modern homes. Plots of land are also available for purchase.
Gravley notes that dues will vary depending on the property size. Most residents within Lake Toxaway Estates live there part-time or are retirees, though the surrounding locale includes natives of Transylvania County who have lived in the area for generations.
The community was impacted by Hurricane Helene in 2024, but Gravely notes that the area suffered only light damage. According to maps from the State of North Carolina, the lake has a very low risk of flooding. Lake Toxaway also has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1, lower than the national average of 4.
