Placida offers a laid-back, waterfront lifestyle on the Southwest Florida coast

Placida is known for its easy access to boating, beaches and sandbars on southwest Florida's Gulf Coast. This former fishing village holds on to the "old Florida" vibe that defines Charlotte County's coastal communities. "It's not super high-end; it's a comfortable place to live," says Amy Mendez, broker associate with Century 21 Sunbelt Realty, who has lived in nearby Punta Gorda for 6 years. "You've got pockets of higher-end, million-dollar homes on the water, but overall, it's just got a very comfortable, down-to-earth feel."

Luxury waterfront homes and low-rise condos

The neighborhood is wedged between Coral Creek and Placida Harbor, with canals leading out to the deep water. Luxury waterfront homes feature coastal designs with pastel blues and wrap-around porches. "Most have sailboat access, which means no major bridges to go under," Mendez says. Homes are also perched on the fairways at Lemon Bay Golf Club. These can go for up to $3 million. Other houses, condos, and townhouses have similar views for a lower price range. Newer Mediterranean-style properties feature large and well-maintained front yards. The median price is about $690,000 for single-family homes, and about $600,000 for townhouses. Several 55-and-up communities are on the north side with one-story condo units. As with any coastal Florida community, hurricanes are a risk, especially from June 1 to November 30. The area has a high flood risk, and many homes near the water are on raised foundations to help prevent flooding. Most also have impact-resistant windows.

Quiet beaches, sandbars and tarpon fishing

The nearby Gasparilla Island features the quiet Boca Grande Beach. It's less crowded thanks to limited parking on the residential roads, Mendez says. Englewood Beach is a busier destination for swimming, sunbathing and sunset watching. The Boca Grande Pass is world-renowned for its spring tarpon fishing season. The sandbar is a popular spot to park a boat, whether it's the annual H2O Music Festival weekend or a typical weekend. "It's very shallow and crystal-clear teal water," Mendez says.

Public school pathways in Charlotte County

Kids are assigned one public pathway through Charlotte County Public Schools. Vineland Elementary School, L.A. Ainger Middle School and Lemon Bay High School earn B-plus grades from Niche. The high school introduced Cambridge University's Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) program in 2021, allowing students to earn early college credits and qualify for the Florida Academic Bright Futures Scholarship. The school has since expanded its offerings to 18 AICE courses. Teens are also encouraged to earn at least one industry certification before graduation.

Outdoor dining and farmers market in Englewood

Grocery trips are possible at the community's centrally located Publix. For the most part, locals turn to surrounding towns for shopping and dining, according to Mendez. About 15 miles north, the beachy city of Englewood is known for its locally-owned boutiques, galleries, cafes and restaurants on Dearborn Street. Locals often enjoy their food on outdoor patios. Mango Bistro serves a variety of breakfast and lunch options with a European and tropical flair, such as crepes, wraps, salads and smoothies. The Englewood Farmers Market spotlights local goods on Thursdays from October through May. The new Wellen Park development has become another shopping and dining hub with food stands, live music and restaurants on the water.

Music fests on the land and sea

About 40,000 music lovers pack the Boca Grande sandbar at the annual H20 Music Festival, considered the largest music festival on the water in the Southeast. Locals park their boats and pull out floaties and paddleboards for live music on the water on Memorial Day weekend. November's Florida International Airshow is another signature event of the Southeast. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels perform aerial stunts over the nearby Punta Gorda Airport. In April, the Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Gardens hosts live music and food trucks at the Blues, Brews and Blooms Fest. Light displays illuminate the gardens in December.

Transportation options and airport access in Placida

Placida Road and Gasparilla Road are the immediate routes through the area. Placida is about 50 miles from Sarasota to the north and Fort Myers to the south. Commuters can take Interstate 75  to both cities. Locals mainly rely on cars, as Placida is not within Charlotte County's public transit service area. Out-of-town travelers can head to Punta Gorda Airport, about 30 miles away. The airport serves about 50 nonstop destinations across the South, the Midwest and the Northeast. HCA Florida Englewood Hospital offers emergency care about 10 miles north.
