Commute nearly anywhere from Roxbury

Bordering Lake Hopatcong, the largest lake in New Jersey, Roxbury is a Morris County township offering a centralized location with quick access to a diverse transportation network. “One of the great things about Morris County is you’re smack in the middle of North Jersey,” says Ted Miller II, a Realtor-Associate with Coldwell Banker Realty, who grew up in Roxbury and has been selling homes here since 1991. “It’s easy enough to get to New York City, and it’s easy enough to get to the Poconos in Pennsylvania or even the Jersey Shore.”

The area originally served as an iron mining hub in the 1700s for the Continental Army, but the construction of roads led to the community’s continued growth. In the late 1800s, Lake Hopatcong was one of the region’s busiest summer destinations. With its location next to the lake, the following decades saw a continued boom with the construction of new train stations, schools and homes. Roxbury today is known for its great schools, shopping hubs and outdoor attractions.

Traditional home styles, condos and townhomes

Colonials and ranch-style homes in Roxbury were primarily built between 1950 and 2000, but there are also older Cape Cods and some contemporary homes built in the last 25 years. The area has many traditional subdivisions with homes packed close together, but some properties have up to 5 acres. Houses typically sell for about $350,000 to $750,000, while Roxbury’s larger homes and waterfront properties usually go for around $800,000 to $1.4 million. The Drakesville condominium community offers two- and three-bedroom units that sell for about $350,000 to $450,000. The Meadows community has two- and three-bedroom townhomes that range from around $350,000 to $550,000.

Commuting via train or I-80

Commuters heading to work in New York City can park and take the train at Mount Arlington station. The quickest route, which can take about two hours, involves changing trains at the Broad Street station to continue to Penn Station in NYC. Drivers also have about an hour and a half on the road when traveling about 40 miles along Interstate 80. For emergencies, Saint Clare's Dover Hospital is almost 5 miles away, off U.S. Route 46. The closest airport is Newark Liberty International, about 34 miles away.

Swimming in Horseshoe Lake, ziplining, hiking trails

Horseshoe Lake is Roxbury’s most popular outdoor attraction. It features a beach, a playground, walking trails and sports facilities. “They actually host the Morris County high school baseball championship there every year,” Miller says. Only members can access the lake’s beach and designated swimming area, but residents can purchase day passes or become members. Horseshoe Lake is also the venue for many town events, including weekly summer concerts and movie nights, when the lake’s swimming time is extended. The park’s Spring Market in May, Summer Market in July and Fall Market in October feature local vendors, food trucks and live music.
In Roxbury’s north end, Hopatcong State Park provides boating, fishing and swimming access to Lake Hopatcong. The FLG X Adventure Course offers ziplines and obstacle courses through the town’s forest. The Berkshire Valley State Wildlife Management Area is a deer hunting area, but there is also a roughly 7-mile trail hikers can follow to go birding or walk their dogs.

Excelling in music and sports in Roxbury Township School District

Of the four elementary schools in the Roxbury Township School District, Jefferson Elementary School is the highest rated, earning a B-plus from Niche. Students usually attend the B-rated Eisenhower Middle School before transferring next door to Roxbury High School, which gets an A-minus. Roxbury High’s ice hockey team won the Morris County Secondary Schools Ice Hockey League Haas Cup Championship in 2025, the first championship win since 2008. While sports are held in high regard, the school district was recognized as being the best community for music education in 2025 by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation.

Shopping centers and local diners along Route 10

Roxbury Mall is an open-air shopping center along U.S. Route 10 with over a dozen stores. Next door, The Shops at Ledgewood Commons is another shopping hub with Walmart Supercenter for essentials. “Most of the surrounding towns come to our area to do their shopping,” says Miller. Route 10 also has popular locally owned restaurants like Giancarlo’s Bakery, which doubles as an Italian deli and pizzeria. The Roxbury Diner has been serving breakfast, lunch and dinner since 1986, while Cliff's Homemade Ice Cream has been a local staple since it opened back in 1975. “It’s been there for a long time,” says Miller. “We used to go there after baseball games when I was a little kid.”
