Rye's distinctive history
Historically, the New York City bedroom community of Rye has been the playground of wealthy Manhattanites. In many ways, it still is. “It’s an upscale community,” explains Mary Jo Ann Byrne, a Realtor with more than two decades of experience with Christie’s International Real Estate Westchester/Hudson Valley. “Rye is one of the most expensive towns in the United States.” Like other cities in the region, history is a big part of Rye’s identity. The neighborhood has two National Historic Landmarks — the Boston Post Road Historic District and Playland Amusement Park. The Jay Estate, the childhood home of John Jay, a Founding Father and the first Chief Justice of the United States, anchors the Boston Post Road Historic District. Byrne says the look of Rye’s downtown is distinct. “It’s very quaint with all the old Tudor homes downtown,” she explains.

Waterfront homes and classic estates
The Long Island Sound waterfront covers a large percentage of the city’s six square miles. Housing in Rye consists of single-family homes and sprawling estates with Tudor and Colonial Revival-style residences. Housing costs in Rye range from $295,000 to $9.8 million. The median housing price is just over $2 million. Byrne adds that any property under $2 million is not a house. “Anything under that is probably a co-op or townhouse,” she says. More than 70% of residents own their home and the average house size is 300,000 square feet. Most homes have stunning curb appeal due to the towering oaks, pine trees and flower gardens residents enjoy as they walk the neighborhood.

The concerts are free at the 100-seat theater and food trucks are available at the shows. The Rye Nature Center is a 47-acre forest and wildlife sanctuary that attracts more than 27,000 visitors annually. The 28-acre Rye Town Park is situated on the shore of the Long Island Sound and is a popular destination for sunbathers and residents who want to spend time in the water. Every Tuesday in the summer, the park hosts free music as part of the Rye Town Park Summer Concert Series.Playland, built in 1928, is run by Westchester County. Rye residents can come to the amusement park to observe for free, and they get a discounted cost to enjoy the rides all day. The park also features a boardwalk.
