A New Jersey suburb

Situated along the western edge of Saddle River is Saddle Brook, a New Jersey Township, where quaint Cape Cods line the streets and annual community fairs hint at the tight-knit nature of the people here. “Everybody knows everybody,” says Fonda Kosmala, a Realtor with Christie’s International Real Estate who has experience in the community. “There are people in the neighborhood who grew up on one street and now live on the next street.” This community-oriented feel is only accentuated by long-running local establishments and green spaces. Saddle Brook is a place where lunchtime means that residents can take a seat at local eateries like the retro Saddle Brook Diner to enjoy classic American flavors, and some time spent outside often means heading to the Saddle River County Park, where visitors can head on a trail that connects distinct recreational sections. Homes here reflect longevity, too; many of the midcentury properties have been recently renovated, but there are a number of new builds. This community is ideal for those wanting a safe, quintessential suburban lifestyle with easy access to New York City.

Cape Cods and Colonial-inspired builds

Saddle Brook is home to cozy Cape Cods with small front gardens and carefully trimmed shrubs. There are also midcentury split-levels with attached basement garages and Colonial-inspired builds that fill the community with symmetry and the occasional pop of color from the shutters. "Saddle Brook has had a lot of new construction on existing foundation," Kosmala says. Many of these are contemporary Craftsman homes. Prices typically range from around $320,000 for a townhouse to $970,000 for a newer construction on an existing foundation. One appeal to this community is that there are "relatively lower taxes for Bergen County," Kosmala says. Another appeal for some people is that most homes here do not have to abide by HOA restrictions. It's not uncommon for properties to have solar panels or backyard pools. As for parking, some people park on the sidewalk-lined streets, but many have attached or detached garages. The community receives a CAP Index Score of 2 out of 10, which designates it as a safe area.

Saddle Brook Diner, Record King and more

Heading into Saddle Brook Diner feels like stepping into the past. Midcentury treasures like the original mural of classic vintage cars pair well with American-style eats, including burgers and shakes. Like the diner, many of the other establishments in the community are along Market Street, including The Plank Pizza Company Beer Parlor, where patrons can enjoy a picnic-style dining experience with many microbrews to pick from. The street is also home to the long-running Record King store and some markets, including Krauszer's Food Store. Kosmala recommends Midland Brew House. "They have good pizzas, they have good apps, they have good tacos," she says. While the downstairs offers a classic sports bar feel, the upstairs level is perfect for those wanting a little bit of a calmer environment. For essentials, locals can head to the Saddle Brook Mall, which is home to major retail stores and the Saddle Brook Farmers Market. For other grocery options, people here will be near a ShopRite location.

Saddle River County Park and nearby recreational spaces

The community’s recreational highlight is Saddle River County Park. “The whole north side of town can basically walk to Saddle River Park,” Kosmala says. Here, walkers and rollerbladers alike head on a wooded multiuse path that stretches through multiple communities and connects five distinct green spaces. Visitors can spread their blankets and enjoy food with a pond view or walk to see a beautiful waterfall area that has become a popular fishing spot for those with licenses. Some people even come here for the park’s athletic facilities. Saddle Brook residents will also be less than 10 miles from nearby hot spots like the Garrett Mountain Reservation, where visitors can hike to enjoy scenic vistas of the city’s skyline or make a new horse friend by taking a lesson at the Garret Mountain Equestrian Center. Golfers will have a couple of nearby options to pick from, including the Arcola Country Club.

Annual festivals and smaller events

Saddle Brook is a place that has plenty of small events like Coffee with a Cop. There are also several bigger events, which in the past have included the St. Phillips Food Truck Fest, a May Event held on the grounds of St. Philips Church, one of the township’s places of worship. During this event, adults can sip on drinks while children spend their time playing in a dedicated area. Fall time means locals can enjoy some of the community’s most popular events. At the annual September Saddle Brook Street Fair & Craft Show, the downtown area transforms into a place bustling with music and rides that kids can enjoy. When October rolls around, community members head to the annual Saddle Brook UNICO Street Fair, where children spend their time jumping on inflatables and other visitors can buy goods from local vendors.
