Downtown Safety Harbor
Nine blocks of local businesses
Downtown is a mix of boutiques, restaurants and cafes, mainly concentrated along Main Street. “We have a lot of shops in the downtown area – and services, of course, hair salons, real estate, attorneys – are all mom-and-pop shops, with the exception of Starbucks,” says Christine Harlan, longtime resident and Realtor with Charles Rutenberg Realty. Shops range from the luxury resale store Kent and Hudson to Backwater Provisions Co., which sells fishing apparel and supplies. Locals can also peruse the fine art available at Syd Entel Galleries. Restaurants include casual eateries like Gigglewaters, a bar and restaurant with a dine-in theatre, and The Tides Seafood Market and Provisions, named the fifth-best restaurant in Tampa Bay by the Tampa Bay Times. Café Vino Tinto’s patrons enjoy their coffee on the outdoor patio. These businesses are across the street from Safety Harbor Resort and Spa, whose Espiritu Santo Springs are frequented by tourists and residents alike. Groceries are nearby, with Publix about 2 miles away. Residents can buy fresh produce, baked goods, and flowers from the Market on Main, a farmers market held every Saturday. Because of its central location, residents of Downtown Safety Harbor can easily access Countryside Mall, which is about 5 miles away, or big box stores in the nearby city of Clearwater.Third Friday closes down Main Street
Downtown Safety Harbor is home to the city’s largest events, from the Bloom N Chalkfest to the Craft Beer Festival. One of the most popular celebrations is the monthly Downtown Third Friday. “All the restaurants open up, the vendors come out,” says Safety Harbor Mayor Joe Ayoub. “I mean, Main Street is packed.” Third Friday originated as a music series, with bands playing at the gazebo at John Wilson Park.Green spaces mingle with downtown shops
Breaking up the rows of businesses are several parks along Main Street. Baranoff Park offers tables and benches where people can unwind underneath a towering oak tree. “We think it’s the oldest oak tree in Pinellas County,” Ayoub says. It’s estimated to be 300 to 500 years old. Safety Harbor Waterfront Park’s walking trail goes past the marina and along Old Tampa Bay, with a boardwalk where visitors can look for stingrays and manatees. “Having green space, a place for people to go and enjoy outdoors and being on the waterfront really brings a lot of people together,” Harlan says. While the park’s fishing pier was destroyed by Hurricane Debby in 2024, Ayoub says that there are already plans to restore it. The Little League practices at City Park, which has a sprawling playground.Murals and mosaics decorate the streets of downtown, many of them made by volunteers and artists who work with the Safety Harbor Art and Music Center (SHAMC). Residents can attend performances, workshops and exhibitions or walk through the outdoor exhibit at the SHAMC’s sister location, Whimzeyland. In addition to offering an extensive catalog of books and programming for its patrons, the Safety Harbor Public Library rents out tools such as pressure washers.
Old cottages renovated into new homes
Colorful gardens and tropical plants decorate the front lawns of residences in Downtown Safety Harbor, most of which are cottages, ranch styles and bungalows from the 1930s and 1960s. Many of these properties have been renovated in recent years. “There’s a lot of older housing inventory in Safety Harbor that’s past its useful life expectancy,” says Cliff Harris, resident and vice president of Operations at Equities Diversified Realty Inc., which he opened with president and general contractor William Buckner. “In general, a lot of the housing stock is being converted.” It is common to see homeowners tearing down the original architecture and building a home from scratch. Smaller homes are usually $350,000 to $500,000, while larger properties can range from $500,000 to $750,000. Some sprawling single-family houses, like those near the water, can cost upward of $1 million. Most townhouses range between $650,000 and $700,000, although the new Harbor North Pointe development starts at about $1.8 million and can exceed $2.5 million. Bayfront condos can cost $800,000 to $1.1 million.According to the Federal Risk Management Agency, Downtown Safety Harbor has a very high risk of hurricanes. However, because of its high elevation, there is only a moderate risk of flooding. Homeowners should check their flood zones and see if flood insurance is necessary.
Downtown is becoming golf cart community
There are often more people walking and biking than driving cars in Downtown Safety Harbor. It is just as likely to see a car as a golf cart on the road. “When you’re out in your golf cart, it’s a lot easier than being in a car to wave and stop and talk and interact with people,” Harris says. “I really think that helps keep the community spirit.” Downtown has free parking for both. Main Street leads about 2 miles to U.S. Route 19. St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport is approximately 10 miles away, while Tampa International Airport is about 15 miles. BayCare Health System is about 3 miles away.Middle school is part of International Baccalaureate program
Downton Safety Harbor is part of Pinellas County Schools, which offers school choice. Safety Harbor Elementary School earns a B-plus from Niche, while Safety Harbor Middle School and Countryside High School receive a B. Safety Harbor Middle School is an International Baccalaureate World School, meaning the curriculum is taught with an interdisciplinary and inquiry-based framework. Private schools in the area include Countryside Christian School and Espiritu Santo Catholic School.
