Saint Stephens Brockway-Carmen
Retailers, bars and restaurants along State Street
On the north side of the neighborhood, State Street has a several places to shop, eat and hang out. “All of your necessities are about 2 minutes away,” says Marquaveon McKinney, a local Realtor with Bay Realty Michigan, who grew up in Saginaw. “You have grocery stores, salons, restaurants. It’s a pretty high traffic area.” Locals can watch sports over wings and drinks at Grand Central, and the lively dive bar Rascals has been around since the 1980s. Dollar Tree and Family Dollar are in the area, and Green Acres Plaza is about a mile away with a Kroger, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and a few Asian restaurants, including Shahi Indian Cuisine and Little Koi, known for its poke bowls.Houses from the early and mid-1900s
Early 1900s bungalows mix with midcentury ranch-style, split-level and Colonial Revival houses. Depending on the size and scope of renovations, move-in ready homes can sell for $90,000 to $200,000. “For this city, that’s a pretty penny,” McKinney says. A few outliers sell for as much as $230,000 or as low as $70,000, while some early 1900s homes still in need of renovations can range from $25,000 to $70,000. Most homes sit right next to each other on quarter-acre lots. It’s common for older homes to have detached garages, while newer builds are attached. Two nearby parks for relaxing and playing
Trees and benches wrap around the open play field at Lathrup Park, a 4-acre space that's home to a little library stand full of used books donated by the community. Fordney Park, also nearby, has more shade with lots of mature trees, plus winding walkways that lead to a central playground and a picnic pavilion.Home to highly rated Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy
Students can start at Chester Miller Elementary School, which receives a C-minus grade from Niche, followed by Thompson Middle School, also rated C-minus. Saginaw United High School, which is currently unrated, recently opened with state-of-the-art facilities. The new high school combined students from the former Arthur Hill High School with students from Saginaw High School. What was once Arthur Hill High is now Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy, an application-based charter school right in the neighborhood. The A-rated school is ranked the best high school in Saginaw.Public buses available through STARS
STARS buses operate along the main roads, including Mackinaw Street, which cuts through the neighborhood’s residential area. Downtown Saginaw is about 10 minutes away, and MBS International Airport is about 20 minutes.
