Spacious housing and varied landscapes near South Elgin

Homes share an architectural identity inspired by Colonial Revival and new traditional styles, while residential streets in the area are secluded and spacious. Single-family properties established in the 1970s and early 1980s tend to have split-level or ranch-style floorplans, while newer homes from the early 2000s can be identified by Craftsman-inspired stylistic touches and medium to high square footage. “You can really get more land for your money out there,” says Sam Kohler, a broker with the Kohler Group and a lifelong resident of the area. Standalone home prices range from the high $300,000s to more than $1 million. Demand for the area is strong, with homes generally selling in two weeks. “I’ve seen some go from listing to sold in less than 48 hours,” Recchia says.

Education in the St. Charles Community School District

Otter Creek kids attend schools within the St. Charles Community School District 303. Ferson Creek Elementary School has a student-teacher ratio of 15:1 and earns an A grade on Niche. Performance-minded students at Thompson Middle School can join one of the school’s ten extracurricular music programs. The school earns an A grade. St. Charles North High School earned a National Blue Ribbon School award from the U.S. Department of Education in 2022 and holds an A-plus grade on Niche. “We’ve seen a lot of people move from Elgin, South Elgin and Aurora just for the schools,” Kohler says.

Nature preserves neighboring suburban streets

Otter Creek Bend Wetland shares its name with the neighborhood. A 1-mile gravel winds through the area, while an overlook near the entrance lets visitors take in the sights and spot some of the local birds and wildlife. Primrose Farm Park lets residents interact with cows, goats, horses and more with hands-on visits, along with four baseball fields for reserved use. The park also offers open-use basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, multi-use field areas and a playground. Ferson Creek Forest Preserve has 11 acres of dedicated space for fishing, boating and nature walks. Members at The Hawk Country Club can enjoy social events, service from the on-site bar and restaurant, and driving days on the 18-hole golf course and range. Additional leisure destinations nearby include the kid-friendly Otter Cove Aquatic Park and Pottawatomie Park.

A mix of retail chains and local restaurants line Randall Road, to the neighborhood’s north. Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Market, Target and Jewel-Osco offer dedicated stops for picking up the essentials. Other familiar stops nearby include Kohl’s, Petco and Best Buy. Dining options nearby include Orale Güey Mexican Modern Cuisine, where multicolored walls and neon alebrije-themed décor accompany inventive cocktails and meals.
