Saint Clairsville has small-town charm and suburban amenities
Saint Clairsville is a small town in the heart of the Ohio River Valley, one hour outside Pittsburgh. Thanks to its quaint downtown and access to the region's only shopping mall, it's one of the most expensive communities in Belmont County. "It's a very sought-after area," says Carol Ann Merritt, a Realtor with Carol Goff & Associates who has several years of experience in the city. She adds that the town is known for good schools, safety and having businesses that are both big and small. "It's basically everything you could ask for in a community without it being large, large, large," she says.

Homes span the decades, with open land ready for new construction
Saint Clairsville has a mix of bungalows from the early 1900s, midcentury ranch-style homes and New Traditional construction from the early 2000s. Especially outside city limits, there are open plots of land for sale. According to Merritt, there is an increased interest in building custom homes around Barnesville. "A lot of level lots are already there with sewer and water hookups," she says.
The median home price is $220,000. Smaller homes start around $100,000, and larger properties with an acre of land can be as high as $700,000. "It's an area where if the home is priced right, it will not be on the market for long," Merritt says. She adds that prices tend to be a tad higher here than most of Belmont County, and many homes receive multiple offers. There are also several apartment complexes and mobile homes in the area.

Downtown dining and big-brand shopping at Ohio Valley Mall
Anchored by a towering historic courthouse, downtown Saint Clairsville has a few boutiques and local restaurants. In addition to several pizza places, Newellstown Diner is a local favorite for its fluffy pancakes and low prices. In 2024, the city approved downtown as a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, meaning patrons can walk around with alcoholic beverages.
Saint Clairsville borders the Ohio Valley Mall, the only major shopping mall in Belmont County. Ohio Valley has lost some of its largest retailers in recent years, but Golden Ticket Cinemas will open there in 2025. The surrounding area is home to stores like Walmart, Sam's Club and Kroger, and a wide selection of restaurants. Mehlman Cafeteria has offered self-serve dining options since 1961, and Kirke's makes all its ice cream in-house.

Parades, farmers markets and car shows
Saint Clairsville doesn't have much in the way of nightlife or major attractions. However, the annual Belmont County Fair happens 5 miles away, and the city's downtown is increasingly active thanks to the efforts of a growing Main Street business coalition. There's a weekly farmers market in the warmer months, plus parades for Christmas and the Fourth of July. Smaller events include scavenger hunts, car shows and a popular chocolate walk. Locals can also stop by the historic Saint Clairsville Public Library for kids' story time or book clubs.

According to Merritt, residents tend to commute out of the city for work, heading to Pittsburgh, Akron or Columbus.
