Peaceful south Alabama enclave
Situated about 20 miles southwest of Mobile via I-10, the community of Jackson Creek is a sleepy little south Alabama enclave with easy highway access. Close to Mobile Bay and the Gulf Shores, homebuyers looking to be near the water will appreciate the location. Though, it’s not necessarily a consideration for local buyers. “We might hit up the shores for a long weekend occasionally, but that’s more for the tourists,” says longtime resident David Hamilton, owner and curator of a local gallery. Jackson Creek is about 10 miles south of the Mobile Regional Airport, making it a convenient home base for frequent fliers. “One of the best things I can say about the neighborhood is that we’re far enough out from the city that we don’t have all the congestion, but we’re close enough to take advantage of all the amenities,” Hamilton says.
Similar price point to Mobile
The real estate market in Jackson Creek is somewhat competitive, with a variety of homes at a wide range of price points. The median sale price for a single-family home was around $180,000 in late 2023, on par with pricing in greater Mobile. Many of the homes are modest ranches, accentuated by columns, steepled gables and covered front porches. There are also modern Acadian homes with well-manicured landscaping and mature tree growth. The streets of Jackson Creek are peaceful and well-maintained, though most lack sidewalks. Homes tend to have driveways, though a carport is more common than a garage in this warm climate. Houses range in price from under $75,000 on the low end for a modest three-bedroom fixer upper to nearly $400,000 on the high end for a spacious four-bedroom new build.

For bargain shopping even closer to home, Dollar General is about a mile south. “If we’re going out, it’s usually in West Mobile somewhere, which is only 10 minutes away,” Hamilton says. Many residents bring their home improvement questions to the friendly faces Dawes Hardware Store, which has a more local feel than traditional big box stores. About 15 miles south via Bellingrath Road is Bellingrath Gardens and Home, a 65-acre public garden and historic home located on the Fowl River. Magic Christmas in Lights hosted at the estate each year is considered one of the best garden holiday light displays in the country.

Muddy Creek Wetlands
An active, outdoor lifestyle is what brings a lot of residents to South Alabama. “I wouldn’t say it was rural or country here, but residents appreciate the quiet and the fresh air,” Hamilton says. There are no classic community parks in Jackson Creek, but it is within driving distance of the coast and protected wetlands. About 10 miles south via McDonald and Half Mile roads is the Muddy Creek Wetlands Management Area, which consists of 200 acres of restored wetlands. The national award-winning mitigation project features a two-mile trail that winds through several distinct bird habitats and leads to a long boardwalk over Muddy Creek. Eventually the trail spills out to a large beaver impoundment where many local species of bird are often spotted.
Jackson Creek is located South of Mobile but near plenty of attractions.
