Subdivisions are popping up across Union Church
Union Church is the perfect setting for a country song about pickup trucks and sunsets. Pecan trees grow in the fields. Dirt roads meander. And anglers and hunters try to outsmart their prey across the vast coastal wetlands – and that prey might just include a feral hog. But change is afoot in this low-key community, which borders the Alabama-Mississippi state line 30 miles southwest of Mobile. “It has changed a lot in three years. Union Church was originally agricultural and residential, and it still is,” says Aleta Boudreaux, a longtime Realtor with Azalea Real Estate Agency in Grand Bay, but “where there were large farms, they have become subdivisions.” Residents are commuting to Mobile, Boudreaux says, and to Pascagoula, Mississippi, to work at Ingalls Shipbuilding and other shipbuilding companies.

Prices in Union Church range from $100,000 for a four-bedroom brick rancher to $799,900 for a five-bedroom columned estate with a guest house. Manufactured homes range from $39,000 to $76,900.

Dees Pecan celebrates its centennial in 2025
The trade-off for the bucolic views? A distinct lack of restaurants and shopping centers. “There are no restaurants in that area,” says Boudreaux. Homeowners must drive to Grand Bay or West Mobile, or they can scope out options along the I-10. “There are no grocery stores except the Walmart, and Dollar Generals everywhere.” The Walmart is nine miles east. In Grand Bay, seafood is showcased in the gumbo, the po’boys and the big fried platters at Kitchen of the Sea while burgers grab the headlines at Sam’s Super Burger, which exudes a retro sense of fun with its checkered-tile floor, plastic serving baskets and dairy bar. One long-time shopping destination spotlights a regional specialty: pecans. “The area is known for its pecan harvest. It's in the fall,” says Boudreaux. “There's Dees Pecan, which is a family-owned pecan grower and distribution shop.” On Dawes Road, the company sells a seemingly endless array of pecan products, from “cheecans” to blue cheese pecan balsamic vinaigrette to chocolate pecan roast coffee.

Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a stop for migratory birds
Rivers, lakes, marshes and beaches are all a short drive from Union Church. “In Mississippi there’s Presley’s Outing on the Escatawpa River. It’s an RV camping resort with fishing, boating and swimming, and they have a restaurant,” Boudreaux says. Another outdoor destination is Dauphin Island, known for its boating and gulf fishing. The island, which is about 30 miles southeast, is also famous for its sunsets. The Escatawpa reaches the sea inside the Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge, where soaring pines and mixed hardwoods meet bayous and marshes along the Alabama coast. Visitors include birdwatchers, anglers and hunters, who are searching for deer and feral hogs.
