Located near the western border of Napa Valley, the city of St. Helena is another foundational block in the food and wine industry that permeates the region. "We're the epicenter of the wine industry in Napa," says Maya Derosa, the Community Development Director for St. Helena. "There's definitely a tourism component to living here." Locals almost always work in tourism, with local vineyards, restaurants and the Culinary Institute of America being the city's top job creators. Clear, sunny weather, mountainous natural beauty and highly ranked public schools attract families and professionals alike. "It's not just for affluent, retired people," Derosa says. "There are families here, and they want to get to know their neighbors."

The city is known for historic bungalows and modern luxury homes
Lot size is a premium in St. Helena, so many houses are placed snugly, with minimal lawns. Drought conditions have encouraged many residents to replace traditional grass lawns with stone or groundcover plants. Turn-of-the-century bungalows and Craftsman homes with Spanish and French influences are priced between $1.1 and $1.6 million, while midcentury ranch-style homes are between $1.1 and $2.8 million. "We have one-of-a-kind homes here," says Derosa. "You can't find it anywhere else – you can't recreate that historic architecture." Manufactured homes cluster in the area's northeastern side, priced between the low $200,000s and the mid-$400,000s, depending on condition. Two-story condos generally sell somewhere in the $700,000s. The largest, most modern homes often have luxury amenities like wine cellars, swimming pools and scenic views. Depending on size and features, these homes sell for anywhere between $1.8 million and $6 million. "You don't move here because the real estate is inexpensive," says Derosa. "There's a certain quality of life that comes with living here."

Regulations encourage locally-owned stores and restaurants above franchises
With strict regulations discouraging chain restaurants and franchises, St. Helena's shopping and dining experiences are defined by their uniqueness. "When you have a cup of coffee or go out to dinner, these are very exclusive establishments that you have at your fingertips," Derosa says. "Our downtown has a very boutique, one-of-a-kind feel." Retail and grocery needs can be met outside of downtown along State Route 128. Farmstead is a Michelin-recommended restaurant specializing in a fine dining spin on down-home country cooking. The menu features deviled eggs, grilled trout and locally sourced beef for its steaks, burgers and tartare. Driven by a fusion of French and Italian cuisine, Violetto offers four- and eight-course prix-fixe menus featuring produce, meat and seafood sourced from California. "If food motivates you, these aren't your typical experiences," says Derosa. "We have iconic restaurants here." St. Helena's wine industry is one of the oldest and most storied in the country, hosting wineries like Krug, Berringer, HALL and many others.

Students can begin at St. Helena Primary School until second grade, when they'll move on to St. Helena Elementary. Niche rates these schools at an A and A-minus, respectively. From there, they'll attend Robert Louis Stevenson Intermediate School before enrolling at St. Helena High School, both of which have As. In addition to being a major job creator, the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone is considered by many to be one of the best culinary schools on the West Coast. "They even offer classes that aren't just for the regular students – they'll open their doors to the public."

Lyman Park is a popular site for annual events
In the city's center, Lyman Park is a single-acre park with a playground and gazebo. However, on Wednesday evenings in the summer, locals bring their lawn chairs here to listen to live music, accompanied by local food trucks and vendors. Locals come to Crane Park to play bocce ball and tennis or to cheer on the local Little League teams at the baseball fields. Highway 128 connect Napa Valley to the Pacific Ocean
Highway 128 cuts through the middle of the city and beyond, connecting Napa Valley to the Pacific Ocean in Mendocino County. Fixed bus routes are available through the Valley Intercity Neighborhood Express (VINE) bus line, which travels all over the Napa Valley region. Several bus stops are on Highway 128.
