Ashland is more suburban than its historic neighbors
Though St. Joseph is well known for its eclectic history, communities like Ashland prove that the area isn’t living in the past. “People definitely come here for our history,” says Kim Schutte, historic preservation planner for the city. “But there’s a lot of change and growth.” In addition to a combination of mid- and 21st-century homes, many residents end up in this neighborhood looking for the suburban conveniences of shopping and public facilities. Community engagement is another draw that the local government puts time and money into. “So many of the recreational events are backed by the city,” says Christina McAllister, a Realtor with Re/Max Professionals. “I really love that they have so many activities for kids.”
More suburban than its historic neighbors, Ashland offers access to midcentury homes, shopping and entertainment.
In addition to the regular exhibitions at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum in Ashland, it also hosts events like kids media mix-ups.

Midcentury and new traditional homes are popular
Most homes in Ashland offer residents a certain amount of elbow room, not as frequently seen in older neighborhoods. Lots are often a quarter-acre and larger, while the average single-family home is over 2,200 square feet, above the national average in the 1,900s. Driveways with two-car garages are standard, and yards are frequently manicured and decorated with trees and foliage. While centennial homes aren’t unheard of, they’re far less common than in older neighborhoods like Downtown and Midtown. Midcentury split-levels and ranch-style homes start in the mid-$70,000s, increasing to the high $290,000s. Modern traditional homes are becoming increasingly popular, selling between the high $220,000s and high $410,000s.
