With ties to Jesse James and the Pony Express, Downtown Saint Joseph wears its past on its sleeve. “There’s an extraordinary amount of history here,” says Kim Schutte, historic preservation planner for the city. “Everywhere you walk, there’s this sense of great things that have happened.” 19th-century style is also a big part of the local architecture, regularly drawing potential homeowners interested in antique surroundings. “Something like 70% of our housing stock is pre-1950,” says Schutte. “And a lot of it is to die for.” Downtown Saint Joseph's CAP Index Crime Score is 8 out of 10, double the national average.

Boudreaux’s Louisiana Seafood and Steaks offers upscale Cajun dining in a historic tavern setting. RC’s Lunch Car is a family-owned diner with a from-scratch menu that includes tacos, wings and sandwiches. Many eateries reflect the area’s melting pot of cultures. “We have a large Mexican and LatinX community,” says Schutte. “So, we’ve got a lot of amazing family run restaurants.”

The Apple Blossom Queen is crowned every spring
Born in St. Joseph, Coleman Hawkins was a prominent saxophonist during the Jazz Age of the early 20th century. HawkFest honors his contributions to music with a free weekend full of live performances from professionals and local amateur talent in September. Local businesses and organizations assemble their floats for the Apple Blossom Parade every spring. A St. Joseph tradition since 1924, the celebration includes a float competition and the crowning of that year’s Apple Blossom Queen.
Central High School has a champion scholar bowl team
Students can begin their education at Carden Park Elementary, which has a B-minus grade from Niche. From there, they could attend Truman Middle School, which has a C. Central High School is the largest of the city’s three high schools, and has a B-minus. “Their scholar bowl team just won the state championship,” says Schutte. “Which is a pretty consistent thing for them.”
