Downtown St. Joseph is filled with historic homes

With ties to Jesse James and the Pony Express, Downtown St. Joseph wears its past on its sleeve. “There’s an extraordinary amount of history here,” says Kim Schutte, historic preservation planner for the city. “Everywhere you walk, there’s this sense of great things that have happened.” 19th-century style is also a big part of the local architecture, regularly drawing potential homeowners interested in antique surroundings. “Something like 70% of our housing stock is pre-1950,” says Schutte. “And a lot of it is to die for.”

Victorian and colonial homes line the streets

Though most of Downtown’s west half is dedicated to businesses, Victorian and turn-of-the-century colonial houses begin dotting the streets as they head east. Worn sidewalks pass through the shade of pine and ash trees. There are few driveways and garages, so street parking is the norm. Homes rarely hit the market in Downtown St. Joseph, so little pricing information is available. Quarter- to half-acre lots sell between $30,000 and $60,000.

The Pony Express started in St. Joseph

Just outside of City Hall, Civic Center Park is the site for a regular rotation of art exhibits and small events. The Pony Express National Museum tells the story of the mail service to the west that got its start in St. Joseph. Krug Park, the largest public park in the city, has been a local hub since its opening in 1902. Its 165 acres feature a rose garden, scenic walking trails, and a well-stocked fishing lagoon. Many visitors are drawn to the park’s “Castle,” an Italian-style structure from the 1920s.

Boudreaux’s has a menu of upscale Cajun dining

The East Hills Shopping Center is a popular spot for chain restaurants and retailers, including JCPenney, rue21 and Rack Room Shoes. Boudreaux’s Louisiana Seafood and Steaks offers upscale Cajun dining in a historic tavern setting. RC’s Lunch Car is a family-owned diner with a from-scratch menu that includes tacos, wings and sandwiches. Many eateries reflect the area’s melting pot of cultures. “We have a large Mexican and Latinx community,” says Schutte. “So we’ve got a lot of amazing family-run restaurants.”

The Apple Blossom Queen is crowned every spring

Born in St. Joseph, Coleman Hawkins was a prominent saxophonist during the Jazz Age of the early 20th century. Hawkfest honors his contributions to music with a free weekend full of live performances from professionals and local amateur talent. Local businesses and organizations assemble their floats for the Apple Blossom Parade every spring. A St. Joseph tradition since 1924, the celebration includes a float competition and the crowning of that year’s Apple Blossom Queen.

Central High School has a champion scholar bowl team

Students can begin their education at Carden Park Elementary, which has a B-minus grade from Niche. From there, they could attend Truman Middle School, which has a C. Central High School is the largest of the city’s three high schools, and has a B. “Their scholar bowl team just won the state championship,” says Schutte. “Which is a pretty consistent thing for them.”

Kansas City is a half hour drive away

Interstate 229 is the main highway in the area. It is a straightforward commute to Kansas City, about an hour’s drive away. The Go St. Joe public bus line has stops on 4th and 6th streets.
