Lovers Lane is one of the city's historic neighborhoods
North of Frederick, Lovers Lane is one of the last historic neighborhoods in St. Joseph before modern homes start cropping up in the east. “Lovers Lane and Ashland are part of the historic side of town,” says Christina McAllister, a Realtor with Re/Max Professionals. “So anything past there tends to be a little newer.” Residents are drawn to the area for lower-than-average real estate prices and proximity to shopping and restaurants. Historic surroundings also attract potential homeowners interested in relics of the American West. “There are a lot of historical facts that you don’t necessarily think of when you move here,” says McAllister.
Victorian and Tudor homes sell for less than $300,000
Turn-of-the-20th-century homes fill the southern end of Lovers Lane, eventually transitioning to more midcentury-era designs in the north. As houses get newer, lot size tends to increase, leaving more room for backyards, driveways and attached garages. Cape Cods and bungalows are priced between the $10,000s and the $130,000s, while Victorian and Tudor homes range from the $110,000s to the $280,000s. The prices of historic homes tend to vary based on renovation. Midcentury ranch-style and split-level homes often sell between the $110,000s and the $450,000s, depending on size and amenities.

Claiming the title of “the oldest saloon west of the Mississippi,” First Ward House offers laid-back eats in a classic tavern atmosphere.
Corby's Dog Park and Pond are filled with canines and catfish
Equipped with water fountains and spaces for small and large breeds, Corby Dog Park is a popular spot for locals to bring their canine companions. Anglers are fond of the fishing docks on Corby Pond, which is fully stocked with bass and catfish. The Jesse James House and Museum was the final home of the famous outlaw and even displays the original bullet hole that sealed his fate. The Pony Express was founded in St. Joseph, and visitors to its National Museum can learn the story of this Wild West mailing service.
The Albrecht-Kemper Museum hosts the Sugarplum Festival
The area’s most well-known annual event is the Apple Blossom Festival. Held every spring, it includes a parade, live entertainment and the coronation of the year’s Apple Blossom Queen. The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art hosts the Sugarplum Festival every November, inviting locals to start the holiday season with art vendors, seasonal food and local crafts.

Students can begin at Field Elementary School, which is in the neighborhood and has a B-plus grade from Niche. From there, they can attend Bode Middle School, which has a C-plus. B-ranked Central High School is particularly well-known for its dedication to the performing arts. “The high school has a really strong music and theater program,” says Kim Schutte, historic preservation planner for the city.
