Southside offers convenient commutes and lower-priced homes

Southside is a working-class St. Joseph neighborhood known for its community spirit. “The south part of St. Joe is a lot less expensive, and the folks that live there are proud to be in that part of town,” says Donnie Moss, a Realtor with KC Realtors since 2018. “They refer to themselves as Southenders, and there’s a lot of pride in the south part of St. Joe.” The neighborhood offers convenient commutes to work, with several factories and industrial facilities nearby. Large companies like Triumph Foods, Daily’s Premium Meats and Nestle Purina have a presence in the community. Separated from the rest of St. Joseph by U.S. Route 36, Southside could be its own town, according to Moss. Shops, restaurants and parks are all available in the neighborhood, offering easy access to necessities and recreation.

A variety of housing styles in southern St. Joseph

Homes in Southside are primarily modest cottages and bungalows, often on small lots. Ranch-style homes are also common, and some areas have New Traditional houses lining the streets. Some pockets of the community feature larger properties that are more spread out. Tall, leafy trees provide plenty of shade throughout the area. Most houses in the neighborhood cost between $50,000 and $550,000.

Highways and buses offer routes around the city

Southside has several ways to get around the neighborhood and the rest of St. Joseph. Lake Avenue and Interstate 229 each offer routes north into downtown. Interstate 29 and U.S. Route 169 provide routes through the east side of the city. I-29 also leads south to Kansas City, about 55 miles away. The Go St. Joe bus system has two routes in the neighborhood, connecting riders to downtown and East Hills Mall. Much of the community is also in the Demand Response Zone, which allows riders to request a ride anywhere within the zone, even if it’s not on a fixed route.

Locally owned restaurants and chain stores in Southside

Southside has several businesses in the area, including multiple popular restaurants. “The one that gets the most attention is called Betty’s Café, and it’s on King Hill Avenue. It’s a destination spot for breakfast. You go there in the morning, and there’s usually a problem finding somewhere to park,” Moss says. Other spots include Adam’s Bar & Grill, a casual restaurant serving burgers and sandwiches. There are also several fast-food chains along the highways. Residents can get groceries and other household items at Walmart or Menard’s on the neighborhood’s east side. Stetson, the iconic hat company, used to have a factory in the neighborhood that is now an outlet store selling hats and other western wear.

Basketball, tennis and hockey at local parks

Hyde Park is a large green space with room for several activities. The park has multiple baseball fields, tennis courts, a splash park and picnic shelters. More recreation is available at Bode Ice Arena, which has an indoor skating rink that hosts youth hockey leagues, figure skating clubs and can be rented for parties. The arena also has outdoor pickleball and basketball courts. The nearby REC Center hosts youth and adult volleyball leagues and exercise classes. It also has a large fitness center and indoor walking track.

Community members rally around St. Joe schools

Hyde Elementary School receives a B-minus from Niche. Spring Garden Middle School and Benton High School each get a C. High school sports are one of many ways the community comes together. “They’re really proud of their school sports. This past basketball season, the boys and girls both played in the state championships,” Moss says. Benton High also offers several activities and clubs, like National Honor Society, band and debate.

Area events bring neighbors together throughout the year

Neighbors come together for community events throughout the year. Hyde Park hosts the annual South Side Fall Festival, which takes place each September. The festival includes a parade, live music, crafts and more than 20 food vendors. The park is also a popular destination around Christmas, when it is transformed into the South Pole. City employees spend over a month decorating the park, which is lit up on Black Friday and open each night for residents to enjoy the display. The St. Joseph Mustangs are a collegiate summer baseball team whose season lasts from May to July. Games take place at Phil Welsh Stadium and include several promotions and giveaways throughout the season.
