60-foot-tall windmill is one highlight of community
Bevo Mill got its name from the 60-foot-tall windmill in the center of the neighborhood. The mill was built in 1917 by the Busch family, one-time controllers of St. Louis beer giant Anheuser-Busch, as a halfway point on trips from their brewery near downtown to a farm estate outside the city. The growth of restaurants, taverns and homes around the mill led to the creation of a neighborhood with its own identity. “It’s in a historic part of St. Louis,” says Allen Brake of Keller Williams Chesterfield. “It has authentic restaurants, bungalows, smaller homes and starter homes. It’s also close in proximity to downtown St. Louis, where people can enjoy sports and other events.”
The windmill is iconic for Bevo Mill.

Barn-like craftsman houses dominate stock
German immigrants were some of the neighborhood’s first settlers, and their influences are visible in Craftsman houses with barn-like gambrel roofs and bungalows that showcase timbering. Prices can vary from around $70,000 to $292,000, says Young Realty Group owner Bryan Young. Bevo Mill’s 2.6-month supply of home inventory suggests it’s a seller’s market, and Young says the housing market there is buzzing. “Houses tend to turn over quickly when they come on the market.” According to Brake, the community is very walkable. Residents can also take advantage of two subway stations and two bus stops for their commute. And Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is only 30 minutes away.

Grab a drink at the Biergarten
A tour of the neighborhood’s local businesses should fittingly start at Das Bevo, the restaurant and event venue that occupies the historic windmill. Depending on the season, patrons can grab a seat in the bier hall or out on the Biergarten, where guests clink mugs of beer and chow down on a Bavarian brunch of bratwurst, sauerkraut, hash browns and eggs. The Biergarten is a relaxing way to spend a sunny day, but the eatery is also lively at night with live music and trivia. To sample a different culture, check out the Bosnian bread at Sana Bakery. Bread is baked fresh daily, so don’t be surprised if you grab a loaf off the shelf and the crust is still warm. The intersection of Morgan Ford Road and Gravois Avenue in the heart of Bevo Mill acts as the neighborhood’s downtown, and this area is where local vendors set up for the Bevo Bazaaro community yard sale and the Bevo Farmer’s Market. Destinations like downtown St. Louis and Forest Park are less than 20 minutes away by car.

The Bevo Mill area is a very pleasant place to live. The people are friendly, and the neighbor is safe. This is an area where those who are looking to have children should definitely look into. On top of this, transportation runs through this area because of this it is easy to commute even if one doesn't have a vehicle. I'm happy to be a resident of the Bevo Mill area.
