Bordered to the north by Forest Park, Cheltenham offers walkable access to one of the most robust amenities in St. Louis. Because the neighborhood is mainly made up of industrial properties and apartment complexes, most of its single-family homes are limited to the western edge of the community. “Not many things come on the market,” says Camille Luna of Better Homes & Gardens, a Realtor actively working in the neighborhood. “People live there and stay there forever, and then houses get passed down to family.” Once known for its Laclede Brick Company plant, Cheltenham is now home to over 1,000 people, nearly 60% of whom rent apartments along Interstate 64 and the park.

Homes and apartments east of Hampton Avenue
Homes along Wise Avenue face modern apartment buildings, while houses near Pierce Avenue border brick warehouses and land undergoing commercial development. The early-20th-century bungalow, colonial and ranch-style homes west of Pierce Avenue are no more than 1,500 square feet and feature small, concrete staircases that connect to the narrow sidewalk. Cheltenham maintains an urban feel thanks to its proximity to Hampton Avenue and two interstates. Homes sit on compact lots, and decorative trees shade the cars parked along each residential street. When the occasional house hits the market, sale prices range from $115,000 to $195,000, less than the median for the City of St. Louis.

Steps from restaurants and a quick ride from Aldi
Because of the abrupt closure of nearby Fields Foods, the nearest grocery store, Schnucks, is about 2 miles away to the west, but additional options like Trader Joe’s and Aldi are within a 5-mile drive via Interstate 64. For national retailers, Saint Louis Galleria is about 4 miles west as well, making it easy to swing by shops like Macy’s and Nordstrom. Restaurants are within a block or two of Cheltenham’s residential area, including Courtesy Diner, an old-school eatery open 24/7, and Nick’s Pub, an Irish joint with burgers and pizza.

For post-secondary school, St. Louis Community College’s Forest Park campus sits in the northeastern corner of Cheltenham and includes culinary arts, health sciences and technology programs. It is also the home of the Archers basketball teams, so games are within a few blocks of home.

A block from the offerings of Forest Park
While Cheltenham has no parks, the neighborhood is bordered by the largest green space in the city: Forest Park. Though it has all the typical offerings, from playgrounds to pavilions, the amenities extend beyond the expected — transforming the 1,300-acre park into a community hub along the western edge of the St. Louis limits. “There’s a zoo, art museum, science museum, history museum and the Boathouse where you can paddleboat or go to the little ducky café,” Luna says. Art Hill is a section of the park with a weekly film series in July and a top destination in the city for sledding in the winter. An annual balloon race also takes place in Forest Park every September, drawing in Cheltenham locals and over 100,000 others from across the city.

Nearby interstates and access to BJC Healthcare
Although the nearest train is the Central West End Station, with Interstate 64 to the north and Interstate 44 to the south, Cheltenham connects to downtown via car in about 7 miles and the major employers of Creve Coeur in 10 miles. BJC Healthcare’s medical campus is also less than 2 miles away, just east of Forest Park. “Cheltenham is nestled in between the Central West End, Dogtown, The Hill and Forest Park,” says Ruth Ogilvie, one of the owners at Colorwheel Hair. “Some of our clients travel from all over the St. Louis region, so we enjoy being close to two major highways.” For trips out of Missouri, the St. Louis Lambert International Airport is less than 15 miles northwest.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
