Clayton-Tamm is a well-known neighborhood, but locals may not recognize it by this name – many St. Louisans know the area as part of Dogtown. “There are four little neighborhoods that make up Dogtown: Clayton-Tamm, Franz Park, Hi-Pointe and Cheltenham,” says Dan Lawless, a Realtor with Wood Brothers Realty who has been selling homes in the area for over five years. “Historically speaking, Dogtown was an old phrase used to reference a mining town.” The mining industry attracted Irish immigrants to the area in the mid-19th century, laying the foundation for what would become a vibrant neighborhood in the heart of St. Louis. “It’s a very cool area to be in. The walkability is high and there’s a nice retail area. It’s the ideal spot to be if you want to be smack dab in the middle of the city,” Lawless says.

Vibrant retail hub along Clayton and Tamm Avenues
Clayton Avenue and Tamm Avenue intersect in the middle of the neighborhood and are home to a charming collection of local shops and restaurants. “There’s great walkability in this area. You can find a lot of cool bars, microbreweries and nightlife,” Lawless says. The retail hub features Irish pubs, barbecue joints and small coffee shops, all within walking distance of homeowners in Clayton-Tamm. Popular spots for dining include Seamus McDaniel’s, a cozy Irish pub known for its wood-paneled interior, and Hogtown Smokehouse, a casual barbecue restaurant serving smoked meats and more. Locals can also grab a drink from Heavy Riff Brewing or a sweet treat from Sugaree Baking Company. For groceries, residents are less than 3 miles from Aldi.

A variety of single-family homes with modest lots
Clayton-Tamm is densely populated with single-family homes built in the first half of the 20th century. Most homes sit side-by-side on raised yards and feature walk-ups leading to small, covered front porches. Closer to Clayton and Tamm Avenues, Dogtown’s industrial history is reflected by rows of workers’ cottages. While many embrace their traditional architecture and original hardwood floors, some of undergone major renovations and feature modern appliances. Homebuyers in this area can find three-bedroom cottages for about $215,000 to $300,000. Further from these major thoroughfares, three-bedroom Craftsman Bungalows are common and start at around $180,000.

I love the sense of community. It is a very young, active neighborhood and is so much fun to live in. I can walk to the zoo in 5 minutes, get on the highway in 2 minutes, and walk one block to get to bars and restaurants. The only downfall to this neighborhood is the amount of crime. I am in Dogtown and the crime is actively rising.
