Columbus Square sits on the doorstep of St. Louis’ premium attractions. The small neighborhood just outside of downtown is within walking distance of the city's major sporting venues and vibrant shopping districts – all with a view of the iconic Gateway Arch. “The location is usually what sells people,” says Larry Christensen, former resident and Broker Owner of Blue World Realty LC. “Even with its proximity, it's still a fairly quiet area.” There’s always something to do in Columbus Square, and residents have direct access to two metro lines running near the neighborhood. Although crime here ranks above the national average according to the CAP Index, numerous investment projects, like the expansion of America’s Convention Center, have sought to redevelop the area. “People are worried about the crime rate, but I lived there for five years and never had any trouble,” Christensen says.

Close to Major Event Venues
Columbus Square’s largest draw is its proximity to St. Louis's major entertainment centers and professional sporting venues. “If you’re a sports fan, Columbus Square is a good place to live because pro baseball, pro hockey, and pro soccer are all within walking distance,” Christensen says. The roar of the crowd can be heard all summer long, echoing from Busch Stadium, home of the MLB’s St. Louis Cardinals. Although the days of professional football are long gone in St. Louis, the Ram’s former stadium, now known as The Dome At America’s Center, hosts numerous concerts and special events throughout the year. Across the street, residents can try their luck at the Horseshoe St. Louis, a casino hotel that technically floats on the Mississippi River.

Contemporary townhouses and brick apartments
Columbus Square’s housing is mainly comprised of multifamily condos, townhouses, and apartments. Contemporary townhouses with vinyl exteriors sit on the neighborhood's sidewalk-lined streets. “There are three different models of townhouses, but everyone comes with a two-car garage,” Christensen says. Prices range from $125,000 to $175,000, although they have increased significantly since 2020. Victorian-style single-family houses can be found scattered throughout the neighborhood, but inventory is limited. Columbus Square also has public housing provided by the St. Louis Housing Authority, like the units found at Cochran Plaza.

Washington Avenue is nearby
Columbus Square is primarily residential, but residents are just a quick stroll away from the assortment of shops, restaurants, and nightclubs on Washington Avenue. One can start their day at Rooster, which serves up tasty breakfast food from locally sourced ingredients. Nearby, The Over/Under Bar & Grill is a great spot to catch the big game. Those looking to stay within the neighborhood may head to Green Leaf Market for weekly groceries and goods.

Columbus Square Park
Columbus Square Park is a nice spot within the neighborhood to enjoy some green space and the cooling shade of towering Linden Trees. However, Lindens are not the only thing that towers above the half-acre park. The Shrine of St. Joseph presides directly to the north and has served the community since the church was completed in 1844. The Shrine was the sight of a Vatican-confirmed miracle in 1864. “It’s a functioning church, and they’ll hold weddings in the courthouse,” Christensen says. “The area is nicely landscaped with some water ponds in the center.”
