A St. Louis suburb with remnants of history
Just 7.5 miles from downtown St. Louis, Ellendale is a community with history always just around the corner. The area’s land used to be part of a homestead owned by a blacksmith. Upon his death, his children took their shares of the land, and many transformed them into residential communities like Ellendale. “In the early 19th century, the area was considered a countryside retreat because it was so far away from the city center,” says Matt Sisul, the president of Ellendale Neighborhood Association. “We have a lot of historical farm homes that are still in existence.” Today, Ellendale is in a central location where residents are just a short drive from downtown St. Louis, Historic Downtown Maplewood and Wildlife Island.

Dutch Colonials alongside bungalows in Ellendale
Ellendale features an eclectic mix of homes dating through all eras of American history. Historical homes dating back to the 19th century are a rarity because of a gas explosion in 1904 that destroyed many of the originals, but there are still some that homebuyers can find on the market. Twentieth-century Dutch Colonials with gambrel roofs are nestled beside siding bungalows. Residents can enjoy front porches with front steps leading to the sidewalks regardless of when homes were built. Many houses lack garages, so street parking is more common though some homes do have driveways. Most homes here list $120,000 and $350,000, with larger homes pricing higher.

Kids can play at the playground, and joggers and bikers can exercise on the paved two-lane trail here. Wildlife Island is just a few miles from Ellendale, an oasis of city attractions and green spaces. It’s home to John F. Kennedy Memorial Forest, where residents can stroll through 60 acres of mature forests. For a day out with family or friends, people can head to the Saint Louis Zoo or the Saint Louis Art Museum.
