St. Louis suburb bordered by interstates and the Mississippi
Mehlville is a neighborhood that balances a quiet life near the Mississippi River with the conveniences of suburban living. “Mehlville is just a tiny community with good schools in the big St. Louis County area,” says Luan Meredith of Realty and Associates, a resident of Mehlville since the 1970s and an agent with several sales in the community. “I raised my children here and have been here most of my life.” With national retailers and its own school district, the community is self-sufficient, but “you can’t say Mehlville without saying St. Louis,” Meredith says. With direct interstate access and multiple bus lines, the neighborhood stays closely connected to happenings in the city, even as it maintains enough distance to feel like a small town.

A mix of architectural styles in South St. Louis County
Houses sit on about a quarter of an acre and feature grassy lots with decorative trees in the front yard. Most residential streets are narrow and lack sidewalks, so houses come with concrete driveways and the occasional attached garage to accommodate the car-dependent nature of the community. Divided into many subdivisions, from Karington Place to Meadows of Forder Oaks, the neighborhood’s architecture varies by construction year. Ranch-style homes comprise most of the properties from the 1960s to 1980s, while traditional styles are more common among homes from the 1990s to 2010s. Two-bedroom properties range from $130,000 to $175,000, while three-bedroom homes cost between $180,000 and $275,000. For four or more bedrooms, prices can exceed $400,000, primarily for lot sizes above the average. There are a few condo buildings in the Mehlville area, most of which cost between $100,000 and $170,000 for two bedrooms.

Trails along the river and historic buildings at Jefferson Barracks
Located just east of Route 231, Sylvan Springs has a playground, skate park and splash pad in its limits. With regular sightings of deer beneath a canopy of mature trees, it’s easy to forget that the southern edge of the City of St. Louis is less than 5 miles north. Just down the street from Sylvan Springs is Jefferson Barracks, a park that incorporates historic buildings from its past as an Army post from the early 1800s to the mid-1900s. Bordered to the east by the Mississippi River, Jefferson Barracks includes trails close to the water’s edge, a disc golf course in the north and an archery range in the south. For rainy days, the Cliff Cave branch of the St. Louis County Library is less than 5 miles south of Mehlville’s parks.
Kids love the splash pad to keep cool on warmer days in Sylvan Springs Park.

National retailers at South County Center
Most of the stores and restaurants in Mehlville are concentrated near Interstate 55, including South County Center, a mall with national retailers like JCPenney and Dillard’s. The neighborhood includes Costco and Sam’s Club for bulk purchases, and there are grocers like Aldi, Schnucks and Dierbergs just a few miles over in Lemay. For dining out, La Fiesta is a popular Mexican restaurant known for its cozy ambiance thanks to its brick walls and custom-painted bar stools, and Tucker’s Place is a steakhouse decorated like a poker room with stained wainscoting, green walls and round, wooden tables.

Taking Interstate 55 into the city
No matter where locals are heading, Mehlville has a highway going in that direction. Interstate 55 connects to downtown St. Louis in less than 15 miles, while Interstate 270 links to the St. Louis Lambert International Airport in less than 30 miles. “It’s a great location for going someplace because the interstate system kind of converges here,” Meredith says. “Highway 55 south or north goes to Chicago or to Memphis, 27 West goes to Kansas City, and 70 goes over into Illinois.” Bus lines serve Mehlville, though some require a transfer at the Shrewsbury-Landsdowne station to get into the city limits.

Mehlville has its nice areas and its more sketchy areas that could use some work. In general it is not a bad area but could use some renovations and more attractions.
