Tucked along the Mississippi River, just minutes south of Downtown St. Louis, this historic neighborhood dates back to the 1800s. When husband and wife Antione and Julia Soulard established an estate in the area that now bears their name, their French heritage began shaping the community—a legacy still visible today in its homes, residents, and events.
Soulard hosts the nation’s second-largest Mardi Gras celebration, surpassed only by New Orleans. The name ‘Soulard,’ which means “drunkard” in French, fittingly reflects the neighborhood’s ties to its brewing history. Anheuser-Busch, one of the oldest German-branded brewing companies, also calls Soulard home, housing its headquarters here.
Additionally, the Soulard Farmers Market, the oldest established farmers market west of the Mississippi, serves as the heart of the neighborhood. “If you’re looking for a strong community, friendly neighbors, and things to do, Soulard is the neighborhood you want to be in,” says Amanda Ramcharan, Ph.D., President-elect of the Soulard Restoration Group.

Second-Empire, French-influenced homes give a sense of identity
Homes in this community reflect its French influence, featuring a distinct St. Louis brick exterior with a style rooted in the 1800s. “The Second Empire architecture style is definitely en vogue because Soulard has French roots. We’re also in the brick city, that red brick is what we are famous for,” says Joe Hostman, realtor at RE/MAX Results.
This architectural style dominates the south side of the community where you will find historic Second-Empire-style housing, Anheuser-Busch headquarters, and historic churches. Prices for these homes typically range from a $250,000 home that welcomes renovations to $700,000 for a brand-new home. However, buyers should be ready to tackle renovations and replace outdated appliances. “It’s not uncommon to have old-school house problems,” says Hostman.

Community gatherings take place at nearby parks
The Soulard Community Garden, maintained by the Soulard Garden Co-op, allows residents to grow full-size gardens while fostering connections with neighbors. Since its start in 1992 with a few beds, the garden has expanded to 26 full plots tended by 40 community members. It hosts butterfly weeds, sunflowers, monarch butterflies, and honeybees. Soulard Park, near the farmers market, features a tot lot where kids can play while parents shop. Gene Slay’s Boys and Girls Club on 11th Street offers a 36,000-square-foot facility that equips Greater St. Louis youth with skills in academics, leadership, health, athletics, and the arts.

Famous marketplace, vintage restaurants, bar traditions keep history alive
Around 1840, Julia Soulard donated two blocks to the city of St. Louis on the condition that the land would be turned into a public market. Today, Soulard Farmers Market has blossomed into a hotspot for residents to browse an open-air market to buy crafts, jewelry, handmade soap, spices, local produce, an expansive meat section, and cajun food at Soulard’s Cajun Corner. Vincent’s 12th Street Market is an alternative for folks who want to avoid crowds and still shop local.
John D. McGurk's Irish Pub and Garden is a vintage Soulard restaurant known for its Reuben sandwiches, bangers and mash, and rowdy atmosphere. Drinking traditions are also plenty here, with locals that look to push their limits. “There is this thing called a barcycle, which is a modified carriage that holds a bar in the middle and the surrounding stools are used to pedal the carriage, all of this while you’re drinking,” says Hostman.

Good things come in pairs
Soulard is split into two personalities. The neighborhood’s history features immigration from across Europe, but German immigration made the most significant imprint with the brewing families, specifically with Anheuser-Busch being in the heart on the south side of the neighborhood. The brewing giant throws its annual Oktoberfest in Soulard Market Park, located near the Soulard Farmers Market, exhibiting live music, entertainment, and lots of beer. During the holiday season, locals interested in moving to this area can buy tickets for the annual Holiday Parlour Tour, a three-hour guided tour in heated shuttles exploring seven residences within the south side.
The north side of the neighborhood is a bit more vibrant with the farmers market, a business district that features classic restaurants and bars, and an athletic club where people watch MMWA (Mid Missouri Wrestling Alliance) fighting. South Broadway Athletic Club, founded in 1899, allows locals to watch amateur wrestling, vintage movies, and concerts.
Soulard holds the second-largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States The neighborhood’s French roots rub off on residents as each year, starting in January, thousands gather at the Soulard Farmers Market for Mardi Gras events. Weekends feature everything from a Cajun cook-off to a wiener dog derby, culminating with the grand parade to cap off the two-month party.
