Tower Grove South

Bookstores, brunch spots and bourbon flights
Crucial to many Tower Grove South residents is the world of dining its streets contain. The South Grand business district on Grand Boulevard offers a beloved mingling of popular businesses, such as low-lit music venues, used bookstores, chain restaurants and local brunch hotspots. Step into King & I Thai Cuisine, where sweet coconut milk and spicy curry combine to form a savory Thai red curry duck aroma. Business activity continues west, where another concentration is on Morgan Ford Road. Visit Black Sheep Whiskey & Wine to pair over 100 whiskey options with hot pretzels and Brussels sprouts. Or make a morning pit stop for caffeine and a new bike chain at Road Crew Coffee & Cycles. Home cooks have two supermarket chain locations in the neighborhood's southeast, plus additional big box retailers scattered around the area to help make errands quick and easy.Red brick and half-timber charms
The architecture of Tower Grove South harkens to Missouri’s plentiful clay deposits with a consistent pattern of tree-shaded streets containing vast rows of red brick structures. But designs vary from street to street. Some blocks include one or two Tudor-style townhomes with half-timbering and steeply pitched roofs tucked between swathes of imposing Foursquares. Others contain seemingly endless supplies of standalone Craftsmans, Greek Revival duplexes or Queen Anne rowhouses. Continuous commercial growth means most homes are never far from businesses, but it also means prices are on the rise. While some needing repairs can sell for between $50,000 to $150,000, a move-in ready home will likely cost at least $200,000. Properties with recent updates or locations near businesses can sell for above $500,000.Grass tennis and birdwatching
Tower Grove Park is the neighborhood's anchor. Racquet sports players meanwhile visit the park for their fixings of pickleball and tennis. Tower Grove Park is also one of only seven places in the U.S. with grass-surface tennis courts. Ornithologists meanwhile visit the park's wild bird garden to enjoy one of St. Louis' best-renowned birdwatching. “People really care about that park. It gets a lot of attention," says Uren, referring to a decades-old catalpa tree, known locally as the “Keebler Elf tree,” removed a few years ago for safety. News coverage and send-off celebrations followed. “It was a big hubbub about removing it,” Uren says.Green-minded and multicultural park events
Events and meetings are expected across the Carrollian pavilions at Tower Grove Park. Locals peruse organic produce or participate in pay-what-you-can yoga workshops at the farmers market twice a week from April through November. Stargazing meetups with the St. Louis Astronomical Society occur when the sun sets. And in August, the flavors and melodies of more than 75 countries come rolling in during the St. Louis Festival of Nations.A-rated biomedicine magnets
Young students begin school at Mann Elementary, which many walk to every day. Older students venture out of the neighborhood to Long Middle School and Roosevelt High School for grades 6-12. All three schools earn Niche scores of C-minus. Some also apply to attend the Collegiate School of Medicine and Biosciences, an A-rated public magnet school located across Kingshighway Boulevard.Bike rides to bus stops
The neighborhood's sidewalks and bike lanes afford high scores for bike safety and walkability. Six bus routes encircle the neighborhood, offering routes across the city. Most commuters rely on Interstate 44, located less than a mile north.Things to consider
Those looking to buy near South Grand Boulevard can expect increased congestion and noise. Business activity is growing in the neighborhood beyond South Grand. Uren tells his clients "'You won’t know the difference going off a couple streets.' It will significantly change the price, but there’s just about as much stuff.”
