Rich Acadian history flows through this town near Lafayette
St. Martinville has held proud to its roots with French-influenced architecture and preservation of its local history. Built on the banks of the Bayou Teche, the city is famous as one of the first Acadian settlements and a key location in the building of Cajun culture. Its French-inspired atmosphere earned it the nickname “Le Petit Paris” in the 19th century, and today this picturesque town in the Acadiana region offers convenient travel to Lafayette and a tapestry of local restaurants.
From small ranchers to estates by the Bayou Teche
“Most of what’s out there are reasonably priced single-family homes,” says Michael Lamperez, broker and president at Caffery Real Estate. Lamperez has more than 14 years of experience selling homes and commercial properties in Acadiana. Residents can find everything from modest manufactured homes to sizeable estates in the area, with a healthy mix of brick bungalows and traditional ranchers in between. Prices range from $60,000 up to the $200,000s, with some of the area’s most lavish properties being waterfront homes and houses with large acreage outside of the downtown area. An average three-bedroom home can be found for about $136,000.

Located in South Louisiana, St. Martin Parish is a hotspot of Cajun culture, dating back to the exiled Acadians relocating from Canada to Louisiana. Today, St. Martin still holds onto its Cajun roots with its festivals and cuisine. “St. Martin is what Lafayette was 40 years ago,” says Realtor Denise Carlson with Savvy Team Realty and St. Martin resident for 25 years. “People here still have Cajun accents. It’s more laid back. More friendly. It’s a whole different atmosphere over here.”
Restaurants throughout St. Martin Parish showcase Cajun culture with robust menus featuring regional classics. In Henderson, Crawfish Town USA is situated in an authentic 50s barn and features crawfish etouffee and fried catfish on the menu. In Breaux Bridge, Café Sydnie Mae is known for its steaks and seafood, and brings a Cajun twist to brunch with omelets with crawfish and crab. Bayou Teche Brewery aims to craft beers that complement Cajun and Creole cuisine. For something sweet, Thee Heavenly Donut sells fried king cakes year-round alongside their fresh homemade donuts.
Local grocery stores are abundant throughout St. Martin Parish, like Joyce’s Supermarket in St. Martinville and Hebert’s of Henderson, but chains are also available across the municipalities. Residents can stop in the Super 1 Foods in Breaux Bridge or the Piggly Wiggly in Cecilia. “We have the things that we need from the larger communities here. We really don’t ever have to go into Lafayette if we don’t want to,” Carlson says.
The Acadian Memorial Heritage Festival and Wooden Boat Congrés reenacts the arrival of the Acadians on the Bayou Teche. Locals wear historical dress and bear banners with family crests on them in a parade of wooden boats down the river. Throughout the day, people can learn about their Acadian roots and listen to Cajun music. The Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival showcases the town as the Crawfish Capital of the World every May. In addition to food, the festival highlights Cajun music and dancing. Locals are crowned every year as part of the Crawfish Festival Royalty. Cycle Zydeco is a four-day cycling event that takes place across St. Martin Parish, Lafayette and the other surrounding parishes the week after Easter. Restaurants across the area offer special deals and live music to encourage bikers to stop in for a bite.
St. Martin boasts opportunities for hunting and fishing throughout the Atchafalaya Basin and the Bayou Teche running through it. “You see people out here, and their kids are out with them catching fish,” Carlson says. Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge is 15,000 acres of bayous, wetlands and oxbow lakes. Boat and paddle launches are scattered throughout the various bayous, encouraging visitors to explore the habitats and observe wildlife. Lake Martin offers cypress and tupelo swamps and bottomland hardwood forest spanning over 9,500 acres. Birdwatchers can find several species of water birds here, including Great Blue Heron, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill and Great Egret.
Because St. Martin Parish is home to many individual municipalities, homebuyers can find all types of housing options here, from single-family homes to trailers. Acadian-style houses are common here, with long front porches and French-inspired sloping roofs. Newer developments feature New Traditional brick homes. Some houses even border the Bayou Teche. Sidewalks are uncommon in neighborhoods here, but carports are, often located on the side of the house with a brick partition hiding cars from the road. Older homes can start around $100,000, but newer developments and bigger lots can reach up to $450,000.
Served by the St. Martin Parish School District, the area has over 17 public schools, including Parks Primary School, which earns a B-plus from Niche. Fifth- through eighth-grade students can attend Parks Middle School, receiving a B-minus from Niche. Earning a C from Niche, Breaux Bridge High School offers several sports, including football, basketball, cross country, softball and powerlifting.
I-10 runs through Henderson and Breaux Bridge, connecting the parish to Lafayette and Baton Rouge. LA 31 links the communities within the parish. The parish also borders Lafayette Regional Airport. Ochsner St. Martin Hospital serves the area from Breaux Bridge.
