Bear Creek is a quiet inland spot with easy access to Boca Ciega Bay
Close to the water but not on it, Bear Creek is a relaxed residential neighborhood that offers value for prospective homebuyers. While Bear Creek is a landlocked neighborhood among a group of communities on the western edge of St. Petersburg near the Gulf of Mexico, it borders the waterfront communities of Pasadena on the Gulf and Gulfport, providing Bear Creek residents with easy access to Boca Ciega Bay just south. Forming the neighborhood's north side is Central Avenue, which becomes the Treasure Island Causeway roughly 2 miles east and provides direct access to downtown Treasure Island, where a large park, the city’s main beach and an array of island eateries are located. “Most people who live there, it’s because it’s very convenient,” says Taylor Welch, a Realtor with Compass Florida LLC.
Midcentury homes with large yards and low traffic
The average home price in Bear Creek is $445,000, which is $75,000 less than in neighboring Pasadena on the Gulf. Most of the single-family housing in Bear Creek consists of ranch-style homes featuring large yards and private driveways. Several midcentury-modern homes, built during Bear Creek’s busiest phase of development in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as modern-style homes, also are found along the neighborhood streets, many of which feature their original brick. Larger homes include frame bungalows, split levels and newer construction featuring custom designs. “It’s a strong (market); it’s a solid neighborhood,” says Welch. “It’s quiet. You don’t get a lot of traffic because there are no through streets. That’s a plus for it as well.”
Bear Creek High School is within walking distance
Bear Creek Elementary, which has been recognized by the state for its community involvement programs, is the lone school in the neighborhood, but Boca Ciega High School is within walking distance. Tyrone Middle is a public charter school located 3 miles away.
Nature and the arts all close to home
The creek for which the neighborhood is named meanders through the community and makes up a sizable portion of Bear Creek Park, a popular green space just outside the neighborhood. Bird-watching is the primary creek-related activity, and the park includes a playground, ballfield and cricket field. Crossing Bear Creek on the south side of the neighborhood is The Pinellas Trail. The paved, multiuse trail is a regional favorite for walking, jogging and bike riding. “That’s a big draw — the ease of being able to hop on the trail and ride,” says Welch. Downtown St. Petersburg is a 30-minute bike ride via the trail. The ecologically protected pathway also runs north from Bear Creek through Clearwater to Tarpon Springs.
Bear Creek does its part in expanding St. Petersburg’s world-renowned arts scene, as it is home to the regional freeFall Theatre. The performing arts venue offers residents the opportunity to see familiar plays and new productions in an intimate setting.
Neighborhood eats and national grocers
Most of Bear Creek’s dining options are located along the Central Avenue corridor. Among the restaurants are neighborhood favorites Kay’s Family and Side Door Deli, a New York-style eatery. A Winn-Dixie and a Walmart Neighborhood Market are located adjacent to the neighborhood's southwest corner at the Pasadena Shopping Center.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
