Up-and-coming, unspoiled bayside community
South of the Gandy Bridge--the main gateway to St. Petersburg from Tampa--sits Gandy, a greatly unspoiled bayside area with pockets of modern development. Its marshy scenery remains mostly undeveloped for now, though as new subdivisions continue to go up, the landscape is changing. As it grows, residents breathe easy knowing they will still have some 3,000 acres of protected wetland within arm's reach of home despite steady growth all around it. “Most of the beachfront neighborhoods in St. Petersburg have been completely built out for a long time," says Helle Hartley, a Realtor at Century 21 Jim White & Associates. “But there’s a lot of space in Gandy for new growth, and it’s starting to gain an ‘up-and-coming’ reputation.”

Coastal stylings with suburban design
Sitting just below the 3-mile-long Gandy Bridge, the neighborhood is only a short drive across from Tampa and is even closer to downtown St. Petersburg. Much of the neighborhood is occupied by commercial space, but the residential areas are expanding, including subdivisions and rumors of continued multi-family developments. For now, the area blends the sleek, contemporary freshness of newer condominiums and townhouses with established pockets of single-family homes, some of which edge up to the water with their own private boat slips. Townhouses and condominiums typically sell for a wide price range depending on their location and amenities. Those further away from the water typically sell for $450,000 to $600,000. Meanwhile, gated condominiums and townhouses built beside the water often sell for between $1 and $2 million.

Kayak tours at Weedon Island Preserve
Directly south of Gandy, 3,190 acres of unspoiled wetlands lie waiting to be explored in Weedon Island Preserve. The massive wildlife refuge is a prime location for spotting egrets and tortoises while hiking and paddling, guided tours for both of which are offered. Local anglers also like to spend time in the preserve too, as it is a known hotspot for catching sheepsheads and snooks. Those looking to break a sweat without leaving civilization behind can head south of Gandy to Riviera Bay Park for an outdoor workout or to play a game of pickup basketball. If leisure is the goal, residents will head to their closest shoreline at Gandy Beach for an afternoon of sunbathing, although some go there to put in a kayak too.

Fresh catch and coffee at the Getaway
The centerpiece of Gandy is the Historic Derby Lane, the nation's oldest track for greyhound racing. The track hasn't hosted a race since 2020 after Florida's legislature banned dog racing. But the former racetrack's indoor Win! Derby Poker Room sees lots of activity as games of Hold'em, Five-card Draw and other card games still run wild. Being a main entry point to St. Petersburg from Tampa, there is a lot of commercial activity at the foot of the Gandy Bridge. Newer locally owned shops with a modern verve, like JJ's Market & Deli, offer a spot to shop for imported wines while waiting for a sandwich to-go. In the opposite direction, established roadside snack shacks like The Getaway showcase Gandy's deep seafaring roots and hunger for fresh catch. While there, some locals will stop off at the adjoining Patrona Coastal Cafe for a morning pick-me-up before crossing the bridge on their commute. A Publix supermarket sits one mile west of the neighborhood at Gateway Crossing.

Things to consider
Gandy is in a coastal floodplain at a high risk of flooding from heavy precipitation and storm surges. So, many homes include mitigation measures such as raised foundations and impact-resistant windows. Although the nearest residential area is buffered by roughly a half-mile of wilderness, a natural gas power plant is also in Gandy, which some health organizations caution against living near.
