Living in a St. Pete bedroom community that hugs multiple highways means Gateway residents can easily head downtown for work and then return home to an impressive collection of retail, restaurants and recreation centers. There are also plenty of local job opportunities thanks to the Baypoint Commerce Center, a 15-building office park that serves much of the Tampa Bay region, and the expansive Raymond James-anchored Carillon Office Park. The neighborhood has a prime location at the intersection of 4th Street, a major north-south corridor, and Gandy Boulevard, which connects to Interstate 275. “A lot of people have fallen in love with St. Pete…but not everyone can work in St. Pete,” says Max Loveland, a listing agent for Feel Great Real Estate with 9 years of experience. “Some people have to work in the Tampa area. [In Gateway,] you have the unique ability to commute by going straight across Gandy. You can be a part of the St. Pete community, but still commute to any of the surrounding communities.”
Bungalows, ranch-style and Spanish revival homes
Aside from a condominium complex, the northern section of the neighborhood, above 94th Avenue, is mostly commercial, while the southern portion is almost exclusively residential. The aforementioned condos typically sell for between $120,000 and $400,000. Condos and townhouses below 94th Avenue can be anywhere from $130,000 to $235,000. Single-family architecture includes bungalows, ranch-style homes and larger Spanish Revival homes that range in price from $250,000 to $750,000. Gateway homes tend to be more affordable than in nearby neighborhoods. “There’s definitely a lot more available on the [west] side of 4th Street,” says Loveland. “The price points jump to the east.” The average home value for Gateway is significantly lower than both the Saint Petersburg average and the national average.
Grab a drink at Miller's Ale House
Gateway Market Center provides plenty of grocery and retail opportunities with a Publix, Target and more. The mall is also home to Miller’s Ale House, a local sports bar known for its casual vibe and impressive on-tap selection. Additional dining choices can be found along 4th Street, where visitors can enjoy Asian fusion dishes at Green Pagoda, a vibrant café atmosphere at Pepo’s Cuban Café and “Deep South Italian” specialties at Noble Crust.
Pinellas County public schools
Gateway students can attend nearby Pinellas County public schools like Sawgrass Lake Elementary, which received a B rating from Niche and serves about 560 students with a student-teacher ratio of 13-to-1. Meadowlawn Middle School is another option that has a C-plus rating from Niche and serves about 885 students with a student-teacher ratio of 20-to-1. Northeast High School received a B-plus rating from Niche and serves about 1,620 students with a student-teacher ratio of 21-to-1. The school offers certified career academies, advanced placement courses and dual enrollment classes in partnership with St. Petersburg College.
Fossil Park Sports Complex offers youth sports leagues
There are plenty of recreation centers nearby to work up a sweat, like the Fossil Park Sports Complex which offers organized youth baseball and softball leagues along with a pond and a skate park. The Willis S. Johns Recreation Center provides afterschool programs for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Nearby Riviera Bay Park features an exercise zone, athletics courts and paved trails. The Weedon Island Preserve, the spacious Sawgrass Lake Park and the Mangrove Bay and Cypress Links Golf Courses are just a short drive away for those seeking additional green spaces.
Crime
Gateway has a CAP Index crime score of six out of 10, above the national average of four. This score is driven by higher-than-average CAP Index crime scores for property crime. Violent crime scores are on par with the national average. According to Risk Factor, Gateway properties are at an extreme flood risk. Pinellas County has a webpage offering flood-related resources to inform and assist residents.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
