From its rainbow murals to its museums and galleries, the Grand Central District wears its art on its sleeve. Located two miles from downtown St. Petersburg between Tampa Bay and the Gulf beaches, the colorful community it is the birthplace of St. Pete Pride and home to over 150 LGBT-owned and ally businesses. "The District is a vibrant and eclectic neighborhood that has preserved its walkable, old main street character and is full of small businesses," says Chris Arnold, Executive Director of the Grand Central District Association. Yet locals enjoy more than just shopping in this neighborhood where they live, work, play and celebrate diversity year-round.
The cornerstone of Grand Central District is its thriving LGBT community. The neighborhood hosted St. Pete Pride from 2003 until recently, when the event was relocated downtown. The neighborhood is still an essential player in the festivities, hosting a Pride Month Kickoff Party and Pride in Grand Central, a street fair with LGBT entertainment, vendors and food. Twenty-two blocks are dedicated to Halloween on Central, with vendors, entertainment and trick-or-treat stops for kids.

Unique bars, boutiques and restaurants on Central Avenue
Running east to west through the neighborhood, Central Avenue is the area’s commercial heart. It’s also home to many of the neighborhood's 450 businesses, that include clothing boutiques, plant stores and bookstores. Craftsman bungalows on brick-paved streets
Residential areas surround the main commercial corridor, with a mix of new-construction townhouses, condominiums and vintage single-family houses, including many Craftsman bungalows from the 1920s. While no parks are in the neighborhood, the Grand Central District has nearby outdoor spaces with fun facilities. Seminole Park features rentable picnic shelters and a shaded playground and is within walking distance of the neighborhood. Located about a mile and a half southeast, Campbell Park is a generous outdoor space that includes football, baseball, tennis and basketball areas. The facilities include a skate park, a recreation center and a public pool. Tropicana Field hosts the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team and is located right next to the neighborhood.

Locals get around on scooters and the trolley
Interstate 275 cuts through the neighborhood and goes to Tampa. Getting around the neighborhood and to surrounding areas does not require a car. Scooters are a popular form of travel within the community, while the Central Avenue Trolley has stops along its namesake street. Central Avenue is a bicycle-friendly road, while First Avenue North and First Avenue South have designated bike lanes and border the neighborhood to the north and south.

Grand Central students attend Pinellas County Schools
Grand Central District students are part of Pinellas County Schools, which earns an A-minus from Niche. Younger students may attend Woodlawn Elementary, which earns a C-plus, and John Hopkins Middle, which earns a C. Teens can attend Gibbs High School, one of the district's oldest public schools, which earns a B. It hosts the Business, Economics, Technology Academy magnet program to meet the need for skilled, high-tech workers. The Tampa Pride Foundation Scholarship awards up to $1,500 to members of the LGBT community who are in financial need and wish to attend college or pursue vocational training.
Woodlawn Elementary School provides an educational foundation for young minds.
There is a student-teacher ratio of 17-1 at John Hopkins middle school.
High school students can attend Gibbs High School in the Palmetto Park neighborhood.
