Nautical living in Greater Pinellas Point

Located in the southernmost section of St. Petersburg and bordered by Tampa Bay, the Greater Pinellas Point neighborhood is a sleepy borough that offers waterfront views and an active outdoor lifestyle. The area includes eight parks, with over 140 acres of green space. And those who yearn for the life aquatic are in luck here. “People move here because it’s close to the water,” says Brittany Ranew, a Realtor with Sotheby’s International Realty. “Residents get water access, and people like to kayak and fish. Beyond that, you’re also super close to the beach.”

Midcentury homes overlooking the water

House styles within Greater Pinellas Point include varied wooden, concrete block and stucco homes. Officially established in the early 1900s, each area has an architecture that reflects its history. Some midcentury bird cage-style houses, built under the Vision-Aire brand and designed for the state’s climate, are considered neighborhood landmarks. One subdivision that accurately reflects the variety and history of Greater Pinellas Point is Lakewood Estates, known for its pink concrete streets. “There’s a handful of condos, but you’ll mostly find single-family homes, some built in the 1920s,” says Ranew. In addition to midcentury modern homes and high-rise condominiums, there are also sprawling waterfront estates. Home prices can range from $110,000 to $4.75 million depending on home style, size and proximity to the water.

Getting around

Greater Pinellas Point is about a 10-minute drive from Downtown St. Pete, making it convenient for commuters and those who want to live close to the action without being right in the middle of it. The main thoroughfare to travel through St. Petersburg is Interstate 275, which conveniently routes drivers to the many schools and other major cities within the Tampa Bay area. Some neighborhoods serve as throughways for people who are just passing through on their commutes, but for the most part Pinellas Point is almost entirely residential, so there's little through traffic. On the flip side, there aren’t any bus stops in the neighborhood. “There isn’t really a walkability factor here,” says Ranew. “You will need a car to get around.”
