Jungle Terrace
History and recreation at Walter Fuller Park
Jungle Terrace owes many of its beloved parks to the area’s deep, largely forgotten history. A walk through the verdant, undisturbed nature of Abercrombie Park can feel like a transportive trip back to 1528 when Spanish settlers first landed nearby to colonize the New World. "Abercrombie is also a place that people want to go because there's not as much activity," says Steve Elftmann, who serves on the Pinellas County Historical Commission. "It's more peaceful and you can walk down to the bay." But the neighborhood's true centerpiece is Walter Fuller Park, a 133-acre expanse named after the father and son duo who developed Jungle Terrace in the early 20th century. The park is a major draw for lake fishing, cooling off in the community pool or kicking it with a youth soccer league. And when those short but strong thunderstorms roll in — a Florida specialty — the park's indoor rec center plays home to basketball, pickleball and group fitness classes. Plus, the park is home to Baseball City, the area's main spring training facility for high school baseball.A love for trees and baseball
When Arbor Day comes around, the neighborhood's enthusiasm for greenery sprouts further as hundreds of attendees from across the area pour into Walter Fuller Park for the Green Thumb Festival. "It's a major, major happening every year," Carlson says, pointing to the flower show, 270-vendor market and children's programming. Spectating the high school spring training season at Baseball City has also long been a neighborhood pastime, even when it was the training facility for the Tampa Bay Rays, the St. Louis Cardinals and, originally, the New York Mets. "I remember walking over there and being able to watch some of the big names training for the season," Elftmann says.Midcentury homes cooled by tree shade
West of Tyrone Boulevard, Jungle Terrace stays true to its name with a continuous canopy of contorted live oaks and whispering palm trees. "It's magnificent from that aspect — especially for climate change because it keeps the streets cool with shade and absorbs carbon," Carlson says. The gridiron on the east side, meanwhile, has less tree coverage. Well-shaded or not, a home in Jungle Terrace is almost certainly more than 50 years old, with most properties built during the 1950s and '60s. Midcentury ranchers are in no short supply, with most single-story designs selling for between $235,000 and $600,000. A few multi-story new builds have trickled in over the past few years as well, forming the higher end of Jungle Terrace's price range, with most starting around $700,000 and frequently hitting $1 million.William's Sub Shop and other longstanding businesses
The location of Jungle Terrace offers quick trips to Tyrone Square, one of St. Petersburg's oldest shopping malls. Just south, a Publix supermarket offers ingredients for home-cooked meals. Multiple chain restaurants can be found along Tyrone Boulevard, but for local flavor, residents might have to explore a bit. No- frills classics such as William's Sub Shop continues to serve the neighborhood with quick fixes for over 60 years. But for some local historical immersion, residents prefer to head south to the Jungle Prada Tavern – a former speakeasy that some locals falsely believe was owned by Al Capone.A-rated public and private high schools
Students in Jungle Terrace begin their education just outside the neighborhood at Seventy-Fourth Street Elementary, which has a Niche score of C-plus. After that, they head to C-rated Azalea Middle School at the opposite end of the neighborhood. For high school, students living west of Tyrone Boulevard attend Boca Ciega High School, rated A-minus, while those on the east side attend Dixie Hollins High, rated B-plus. Admiral Farragut Academy, an A-plus- rated private school just south of the neighborhood, is the third-best private high school in Florida, according to Niche.Bike rides along the Pinellas Trail
Multiple bus routes pass through Jungle Terrace and converge on Tyrone Boulevard. But traffic on Tyrone Boulevard can move slowly, especially approaching Bay Pines Boulevard. Cyclists traveling to downtown St. Petersburg or up to Clearwater have it good: The neighborhood offers immediate access to the Pinellas Trail, a 45-mile biking trail that crosses the Boca Ciega Bay on the scenic Long Bayou Footbridge.
