Family-oriented neighborhood six miles from St. Pete

If location is key, residents of St. Petersburg's Meadowlawn neighborhood are pretty happy about theirs. This nature-heavy neighborhood is dotted by lakes and ponds and located about six miles from downtown. The location is one reason why Jason Shoopak set up Ninja Academy of Martial Arts in the neighborhood about five years ago. "It's a really good central location between north and south St. Petersburg, and multiple neighborhoods around the area," Shoopak says. Locals enjoy all that the city has to offer, yet they can stay close to home for parks, a youth baseball league, an above-average elementary school and a library. "Some of my clients say they love the neighborhood," says Shoopak, a lifelong St. Petersburg resident. "They say it's very family-oriented."

Updated, midcentury ranch homes in Meadowlawn

Single-family homes make up most of the housing stock in Meadowlawn, and low-lying midcentury ranch houses are abundant. While many are older, they tend to be well-maintained, and homebuyers don't have to pay a premium for updated interiors. Two- to four-bedroom properties are priced between $250,000 and $700,000. In true ranch style, many homes come with carports big enough for one vehicle. Many sit on generous amounts of land, with a median lot size of 7,405 square feet. While many streets don't have sidewalks, they do tend to have cover from the sun with lots of mature trees.

Playground near the water at Meadowlawn Park

Small lakes and ponds are scattered across Meadowlawn, creating safe havens for wildlife. Lynch Lake Park is a popular spot for bird watching and seasonal fishing. Kids enjoy a view of the water from the swing set at Meadownlawn Park, while parents can relax on the benches. The park also has an open stretch of grass, allowing for sports, games and picnics. Kids can participate in the Fossil Park Youth Baseball League at the fields located just east of the neighborhood.

There, students can participate in certified career academies including Information Technology and Finance to earn college credits and industry certifications.

Big box shopping, bars and British eats

Shopping centers are located to the northeast and southeast of Meadowlawn with big box shopping and unique dining experiences. Fresh produce and other groceries are available at Target and Winn-Dixie, while locals can shop for clothes and home supplies at HomeGoods, Bealls and T.J. Maxx. Slizzy McGee's is a neighborhood haunt with beer on tap and games on the TVs. Jacks London Grill is a casual British restaurant serving classics like fish and chips.

Locals race to St. Petersburg events

Meadowlawn is near to a plethora of annual events through St. Petersburg. Each Thursday evening in the spring and fall, the city hosts Movies in the Park on the waterfront at North Straub, with live music before the feature film. The city celebrates Pride Month with its own festival in June. Racing fans may enjoy the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Out-of-town travel from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport

Meadowlawn is fairly car-dependent, though locals can get north and south through the neighborhood with a designated bike lane on 16th Street North. There is ample access to public transportation with bus stops surrounding the neighborhood. Locals can take the number 9, 17 and 75 buses around the city through the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority. Interstate 275 borders the neighborhood to the west, and goes to St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, which is about 7 miles north.
