Friendly St. Pete's haven
Cozy Oakwood Gardens, just west of Magnolia Heights and east of Interstate 275, offers walkable streets, a laid-back vibe and the uplifting ambiance of bungalows and cottages in a sunny palette of coastal hues. Properties sit close together, nurturing a sociable character, and small businesses serve the community from homes or within occasional retail pockets. It’s the kind of hometown where neighbors know each other, building friendships through impromptu block parties, popup makers’ markets and family-friendly holiday traditions. Curtis Bailey, who grew up here and owns Skeets Pool Service in the neighborhood, says, “I still call it Woodlawn because if you grew up here, you went to Woodlawn Elementary, but some people may also call it Magnolia Heights. Regardless, what’s great about living here is that you’re convenient to everything, and the housing market isn’t going down any time soon. You have good schools, and you’re close to so many amenities.”
Beachy cottages to new builds
Small yards hold clusters of long-established trees, and flat streets are numbered, making this peaceful neighborhood a cinch to navigate. Homes range from a tiny, updated midcentury two-bedroom for $275,000 to a brand-new two-story gem with contemporary farmhouse flair for $770,000. In between, rebuilds from the 2000s ask around $500,000, and a renovated 1920s triplex can fetch $550,000. Matt Weeks, local Realtor with Mark Spain Real Estate, says, “People move here for affordability and proximity — to the beach, Tropicana field and downtown. Plus, you’ve got the bay on the east and the Gulf on the west. It’s very central, and yet you have this beachy cottage feel.”

Kiwanis and Crescent Lake parks
Outdoor pursuits are a natural part of the Oakwood Gardens lifestyle. Kiwanis Park is tucked between homes, offering a picnic lawn and playground. Just a mile or two south, locals play tennis or baseball at Crescent Lake Park, loop around the water and lawn on paved pathways past banyan trees or play at the playground. Pups appreciate the Crescent Lake Dog Park, with separate zones for small dogs and off-leash play, and even a splash pad with cooling fountains.
Herringbone, Lida's and Winn-Dixie
Home-based businesses dot residential streets, and a smattering of conveniences and retailers line 16th Street. Artist and wellness coach, Elise Hummel, operates Intuitive Heart Creations in the neighborhood, encouraging imagination and recovery through art. Herringbone Home Furnishings on 16th Street features cottage, farmhouse and coastal furnishings, garden pieces and artisanal gifts from candles to fragrances. Services and cafes also line Dr. M.L.K. Jr Street, just west of the neighborhood. Resident green-thumbs and decorators frequent Lida’s Jungle, the go-to for unique plants, ceramic workshops and plant maintenance. Daniel Reyes, a 15-year resident, and Sarah Reyes, who grew up here, co-own Lida’s and describe the area as “close to downtown but far enough away to never be stuck in any traffic or hustle.” Reyes says, “You have almost everything you need right here, including great coffee shops like Pineapple Espresso with a drive-through, or Blush Tea and Coffee with a dine-in cafe. We also just got a brand-new brewery, Golden Isles, that’s a pretty big deal. Now locals walk to so many things without having to go downtown for date nights or get-togethers. And there’s a genuine community feel; it’s very friendly.” Around the corner from Lida’s, residents can stock up at Winn-Dixie, or choose from several Publix stores and a Trader Joe’s within a mile or two. Adds Weeks, “Downtown St. Pete’s is so close, too; and that’s where you can explore museums and watch the Tampa Bay Rays play.”
The local Stone Soup Cafe & Pub is a great place to grab lunch or dinner with your furry friend.
Herringbone Home has beautiful historic pieces with lots of character to enhance your home.
