A secluded forest-like enclave in the eastern St. Pete
Bordered by 85 acres of mangroves, 10 acres of nature preserves and over 20 acres of lakes, St. Petersburg’s Placido Bayou feels like a secluded forest retreat. Despite its quiet, isolated feel, the 360-acre gated community is 4 miles from downtown and a vibrant shopping and arts district. “It’s not the beachy scene that you would see over on Clearwater Beach, but you still have the scenic water views,” says Christopher Gabbard, Realtor with LPT Realty and four years of experience. “It’s a little low-key, nice and peaceful, but with easy access to art, shopping and restaurants.”
Placido Bayou offers both waterfront homes as well as wildlife.

Home to 26 acres of lakes, nature preserves and trails
With 26 acres of lakes and surrounding wildlife-rich bayous, residents enjoy diverse outdoor recreation. Sailboat and powerboat owners can easily cruise the deep-water canals out to Tampa Bay; anglers can drop a line in the canals and hikers can trek around the paths along the lakes. The Racquet Club of St. Petersburg sits on the other side of the neighborhood gates, where members can access pickleball and tennis courts, a pool and a restaurant. Puryear Park, north of the neighborhood, has a playground, multi-purpose fields and tennis courts. Northeast Park is less than 3 miles north and has three lit baseball fields, but it’s also connected to two of the top golf courses in the area. Mangrove Bay, owned by the city, is a public 18-hole course spread across 180 acres. Also owned by the city, Cypress Links Golf Course is a public 9-hole course with a pro shop and driving range. The 3,000-acre Weedon Island Preserve is 7 miles east. Along the western shore of Tampa Bay, the wildlife and mangrove forest preserve has nearly 5 miles of nature trails, a fishing pier and a 45-foot observation tower that provides views of the entire preserve, Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg. The preserve also has a 4-mile boating loop called the South Paddling Trail that meanders through tunnels with various access points along the bay. St. Pete Pier is 4 miles south, offering 26 acres of waterfront parks, public beaches and a marina. St. Pete Beach is 14 miles west for more outdoor fun.

Waterfront Mediterranean-style mansions
Niche ranks Placido Bayou as the ninth-best neighborhood in St. Petersburg to buy a house and the 13th-best neighborhood in the city. Its tree-lined streets are filled with over 600 houses, primarily Spanish and Mediterranean Revival-inspired homes and two-story stucco townhouses surrounded by waterways. Most homes were built in the late 1980s and range from the mid-$500,000s for a three-bedroom over 1,500 square feet to over $2 million for a five-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot waterfront estate. Townhouses in The Preserve subdivision range from the high-$300,000s for a two-bedroom over 1,200 square feet to the mid-$800,000s for a three-bedroom over 2,000 square feet. “The consumers listing their houses are still getting top dollar, and St. Pete is drawing a lot of people from out of state down here,” Gabbard says. Residents enjoy large lot sizes, with most around a quarter acre but some spanning nearly 1 acre. Most homes have multi-car garages, private backyard pools with resort-style tropical landscaping and spacious driveways for boats or other toys. Million-dollar homes are often custom-built and sit on the water closest to the preserve, with private boat docks. The neighborhood is gated and guarded 24/7, and its surrounding blanket of towering oaks and palms with the canals at its back offers ultimate tranquility and privacy.

The neighborhood eatery Root + Clay offers sandwiches and wings. Most other amenities are less than 2 miles west in a bustling business corridor. “The supermarkets are right off of 4th street, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants,” Gabbard says. “We have a new Whole Foods right across the street from Publix and quite a few fine [dining] restaurants.” Red Mesa Restaurant is a modern Mexican joint known for its seafood enchiladas, pork carnitas and sangrias. Fresh Kitchen is the go-to for cold-pressed juices, organic veggie bowls and salads. The no-frills El Cap Restaurant has been a favorite for burgers, chili dogs and sandwiches for over 60 years. Besides Publix, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, and other major retailers are also on 4th Street. Downtown St. Pete is 4 miles south for more shopping, dining and entertainment. In the heart of downtown, Williams Park hosts the St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market, offering fresh produce and locally made products.
