St. Pete Heights is gaining identity with rising home values
A small neighborhood determined to make a name for itself, St. Pete Heights offers quiet urban living in a transitional residential community north of downtown. “That’s more of an up-and-coming area because so many people are moving to Sarasota, it has forced some of these neighborhoods to gentrify,” says Erin Aaron, a Realtor with EXP Realty LLC and native of St. Petersburg. “Investors have come into these neighborhoods that have a lot of smaller homes and have done a tremendous job with renovations. These were never bad neighborhoods, but all the remodels have really brought their value up.”
Residents of the community, which is nestled among the more well-known neighborhoods in central St. Petersburg, have worked to establish an identity in recent years. Previously, the area bounded by 30th Avenue North and 38th Avenue North and 28th Street North and Interstate 275, didn’t have a name until the community banded together to get it recognized by the city. Residents then formed a neighborhood association. St. Pete Heights is on the way to taking its place among the city’s array of eclectic neighborhoods. “They are all different and all have their little niches,” says Aaron.
Most homes are 2-bedroom bungalows or larger Florida ranchers
Primarily residential, St. Pete Heights is home to a variety of traditional single-family housing options. Bungalows highlight the collection of smaller homes, typically 2-bedroom structures built between the 1950s and 1970s. Florida ranchers with spacious yards and private driveways on oversized lots are featured among the neighborhood’s largest homes. Prices typically range between the high $300,000s and the low $500,000s.
Students attend public schools including a B-rated high school
Neighborhood students can attend New Heights Elementary School, Meadowlawn Middle School and Northeast High School, a B-rated institution that features a Culinary Arts Academy.
Dining and shopping options line 34th and 4th streets nearby
Just a mile west is 34th Street, a retail and dining corridor that serves the area’s many neighborhoods. Residents looking to spend time on the water will find everything they need at St. Pete Fishing Outfitters, while one-stop shopping for daily essentials can be done at the nearby Market on 34th Street North, which features a Publix and a Sam’s Club. In between, The Blend is a highly rated local chain offering coffee and craft cocktails. Less than 2 miles east is 4th Street, the city’s premier retail and dining corridor. “It’s very, very convenient because of its close proximity to downtown St. Petersburg and also east St. Petersburg and 4th Street, which has all the shops and restaurants,” says Aaron. Popular neighborhood eateries include Johnny’s Restaurant & Pizza, which offers a unique mix of American breakfast classics and traditional Italian dishes, and Pam’s Roti Shop & Caribbean Market, which serves up authentic island fare.
Central location makes commuting to Tampa or Sarasota easy
The neighborhood occupies a desirable location. It is insulated from the city’s buzzy sectors yet close enough to enjoy its modern conveniences. I-275 provides access to downtown St. Petersburg and the Tampa Bay waterfront only 4 miles away. And 34th Street, which is U.S. Route 19, connects directly to the metropolitan areas on either side of St. Petersburg. “It’s also convenient if you need to get to Sarasota and Tampa,” says Aaron.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
