A quiet community halfway from downtown to beaches
A little over halfway from downtown St. Petersburg towards the barrier beach of Treasure Island, a residential pocket called Westminster Heights calmly hangs off of Central Avenue. It might not be bursting with color like its beachy neighbors to the west or brimming with trendy gastropubs like its chic neighbors to the east, but that's the whole point. Westminster Heights is a quiet neighborhood of single-family homes plucked right out of midcentury America. It's a community of friends and neighbors who enjoy the proximity to city hotspots, yet also revel in a few hip elements of its own, such as longstanding businesses, community theaters and long bike trails. Yet despite this, Westminster Heights sees considerably less congestion than those hotspots only a few miles down the road.

Midcentury stylings and homes meet new construction
The neighborhood flashes many of the simple elegancies that are commonplace with mid-20th century neighborhoods across the region. A grotto of live oaks draped with Spanish Moss hangs over red bricks paving the way down 5th Avenue, casting shade on green lawns guarded by white picket fences. “It’s a pretty quiet neighborhood, there’s not too much to say about it. The houses are nice, the people are nice,” says local Realtor Aaron Hunt of Avalon Group Realty, who has worked in the area for over ten years. Like many of St. Petersburg's residential areas, relics of the region's midcentury architectural influences are numerous. Single-family homes are the primary option in Westminster Heights, with the most common option being a single-story rancher from the mid-20th century, many of which have received recent renovations. These typically sell for between $275,000 and $500,000. Meanwhile, a few newer builds from the last 10 years have trickled into Westminster Heights, raising prices and square footage. Newer homes in a variety of styles, often sporting a second story, are typically priced between $650,000 and $800,000.

Access to the Pinellas Trail
The neighborhood's greatest asset is its multiple connections to the Pinellas Trail on 6th Street. The 45-mile biking trail spans from downtown St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs and connects the neighborhood with dozens of nearby communities. Popular with cyclists and runners, it can get quite crowded on weekends. When that happens, residents have multiple options close to home, including one within walking distance at Westminster Community Playground. If seeking more room to spread out, Bear Creek Park is one block north and is one of few places around where locals can play a game of cricket. When looking to hit the beach, residents are roughly 3 miles east of the coastal entertainment hotspot of Treasure Island.

Pottery classes at The Hive
Although small, residents have no shortage of outlets for social activities. The area plays home to a small contingent of creatives and artisans working in and around Westminster Heights, such as the freeFall Theater, a regional theater that hosts frequent film screenings and theatrical productions. On the other side of the neighborhood, The Hive attracts local creators with pottery classes for varying levels of experience. The Westminster Heights Neighborhood Association also organizes frequent events, such as recurring neighborhood cleanup days and an annual block party. And all through the year, students stop by the Childs Park YMCA for after-school programming and annual summer camps.

Longstanding breakfast joints and new bakeries
When residents need to run errands or get a quick fix, Central Avenue is where they go. The commercial thoroughfare is loaded with chain and locally owned businesses from Sunset Park in the West to Pioneer Park in the east. “Westminster Heights' top selling point is probably the location. Treasure Island Beach is 10 minutes west, Downtown is 10 minutes east," Hunt says. "It’s a very convenient spot." There are not a ton of restaurants where Central Avenue meets Westminster Heights, though. However, Kopper Kitchen has continued to serve crowds of locals with high stacks of pancakes and a rotating dessert menu since the no-frills diner opened in 1976. Newer businesses, meanwhile, highlight the demand for additional flavors, such as the Crumb Factory Bakery & Cafe. The one thing missing on Central Avenue is a supermarket. While a Family Dollar on Central Avenue can be used to pick up a few items, the nearest one-stop shop is a Winn-Dixie just under a mile north of Central Avenue at Tyrone Gardens.

Several bus routes serve those residents with stops surrounding Westminster Heights on all major roads. The neighborhood is also walkable, with most residential streets containing a sidewalk and a few speedbumps to slow vehicles. Some streets offer easy connections with the Pinellas Trail for a pleasant commute to work.
