It's a big family in Saint Rose
Saint Rose of St. Charles Parish is all about generational ties, like most of New Orleans (NOLA), where one of the most common questions is "how’s your Mom and dem," or how's your family? "People care about you; they speak to you when you're on the street. A lot of people have not moved away, and families live right up the street from each other," says broker Stephanie Morris of MS Realty, LLC, who's sold homes in the area since 2006. Locals live on gridded, suburban streets just south of Interstate 10 while being 20 miles from the cultural mecca of downtown New Orleans. Two draws of Saint Rose is its laid-back rural lifestyle and solid schools, all rated A-minus on Niche. However, one of the challenges locals face is the neighborhood's proximity to the Mississippi River, just south, not only because of flooding but also because of the industries this waterway attracts. The 85-mile stretch of land between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, which Saint Rose is on, is called Cancer Alley for its prominence of Fossil fuel and petrochemical facilities. There's a noticeable chemical factory on the neighborhood's western side, right next to its suburban streets.

Elkinsville is a big part of Saint Rose's story
A part of Saint Rose used to be known as Elkinsville, or "Freetown," named after Palmer Elkins – a formerly enslaved man who bought the area's 160 acres, giving Black people a place to live, work and worship from First through Fourth Streets. Much of what life was like back then is preserved in local stories. The Elkinsville Historical Restoration Association is bringing the history to the forefront, and pushed for the historical marker that now designates where Freetown used to be.

The food in Saint Rose is made with love
People bond over homemade food in Saint Rose. "We like to hang out in each other's yards and have crawfish boils," says local Erica Johnson. Johnson runs one of the few restaurants in town, Stamp Dat Soul and Seafood on Saint Rose Avenue, known for their signature wings, burgers and po'boys. Johnson credits her grandmother for her culinary skills: "We cooked together. She showed me how to make a roux from scratch. It's close to my heart." Victoria's Latin Restaurant is just a mile west of Johnson's family-owned business, serving generous portions of carne asada, pupusas and arroz con pollo. Because St. Rose is relatively small, locals can walk to key places. "Growing up, we walked to other neighborhoods. You can walk on the levee to anyone's house and the corner store, River Discount," Johnson says. Locals head to Metairie, 20 miles away, for box chains from Whole Foods to Dillard's to Pottery Barn.

The Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge connects Saint Rose
The Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge, built in the ‘80s, connects the west and east bank of St. Charles Parish. “It opened all these possibilities to the people in the Parish. They didn’t have to take a ferry to get from one side of the river to the other,” says NOLA local Elizabeth Sampson, who’s family traces their lineage back in this city for centuries. St. Charles Parish Hospital is over the bridge, within 9 miles. The bridge also connects to State Route 310, which passes through the heart of Saint Rose and intersects with U.S. Route 61 and Interstate 10, which offers a direct route downtown. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is within 8 miles.

Parquet Park is the new community green space
Short Street's Parquet Park opened in 2021 and it's already making a big impact on the community. Built by Pro Football Hall of Famer Ed Reed and his foundation, the park was Mr. Reed's gift to his hometown so children would have a place to play. There's a sizeable multi-use turf field, a walking path, two basketball courts and a playground for little ones. Ball players head to the batting cages off River Road at the IMTT Field and Playground. The Mississippi River is not used for recreation as it's heavily industrial. “Just on the other side of the river there are [more] plants,” says local Realtor Ken Hamrick, who’s worked with Keller Williams Realty, Inc for four years and lived in NOLA his whole life.

Homes in Saint Rose were built from at least the '50s onward
Saint Rose's subdivisions are mostly gridded, but a few are winding or straight, allowing for spacious lots. Blue-collar businesses dot the area and fill out the space between subdivisions. Many yards are well tended, offering short to modest setbacks from the street, some with or without sidewalks. "There are a lot of rural small houses, but there have been some new subdivisions that have gone up in the last few years," Morris says. The newest homes are being built in the neo-traditional style by Dunn Homes, LLC, costing around $350,000. Saint Rose' rural cottages trace back to at least the '50s. Acadian, French Provincial and Colonial Revivals also appear throughout the neighborhood. Depending on square footage and lot size, established homes range from the mid $100,000s to $400,000s, with the largest homes offering over 4,000 square feet. Saint Rose is at risk for flooding, giving its relationship to the Mississippi.

Students attend St. Charles Parish Public Schools
Students attend St. Rose Elementary, Albert Cammon Middle School and Destrehan High School within the St. Charles Parish Public Schools district. And while all of these schools get an A-minus rating on Niche, the district itself earns a solid A ranking. “A lot of people move out to that area because of that school system. The quality of education that you get for a public school is as good or better as what you’re getting at private schools here in New Orleans,” Hamrick says.

Mardi Gras, a family-friendly event in Saint Rose
Sampson says NOLA suburbs like Saint Rose hold their own Mardi Gras and are more family-friendly than what happens on Bourbon Street. Bonfires brighten the levees along the Mississippi during Christmastime, an old Cajun tradition that lights the way for Papa Noël. A congregation still worships at Mount Zion Baptist Church, an over 100-year-old church in Elkinsville. Other local houses of worship include St. Rose Community Church and Faizane Madina New Orleans La, a masjid.
